back to article Oracle rolls more Sun heads

Oracle has laid off additional Sun workers in Europe and Asia, according to a company SEC filing. Back in January, when it ate Sun Microsystems, Oracle bragged that it was hiring 2,000 people to boost its Sparc hardware and Soladfris Unix business, but it looks like a lot more people will be going from the Sun unit than newbies …

    FAIL

    spending and extra $600 million so as not to spend $600 million?

    Unless I fail at English, doesn't the part "$675m to $825m for the Sun restructuring, which "eliminates redundant costs resulting from the acquisition of Sun"" imply that Oracle is going to spend between $400 and $600 million, in order not to spend... how much? that same amount? marginally more? Some tea and a slice of fail cake with cream, please.

    Cancelling Contracts

    Perhaps all the cash is needed to pay off Sun customers after canceling their support contracts.

    @Even Jelical

    Yeah, maybe Fuji wants to create a new generation of expensive and slow microprocessors that cater a fringe market.

    Seriously, Oracle married a dead corpse and now they must pay for the funeral.

    More likely...

    I think it is more likely that unlike Sun, Oracle is getting rid of most of the overpaid, underdelivering, executive types. Their pay out is much higher than the everyday types(10X)... I doubt that they are axing anything like 7000 employees as the layoffs are targeted outside of the US, and going by how many foreign workers Sun employs, they would basically be giving up more than half their international employees.

    Will there be anyone left to layoff?

    Except for the absolutely dreadful Sun management? People are resigning daily from Sun, the valuable people, not the deadweight. It's pretty bad when you're left hoping that you're on the list to get cut after reading this article.

      Who will be left?

      Yes, the ballast that kept missing every reduction in force (RIF) at Sun since they began!
