They were the 'internet for dummies' ISP of the 90s. Then they started charging craploads for their service, which was the worst of the "extra value networks" (Compuserve, Prodigy and such). It only survived as much because most of the rural US didn't have broadband... as soon as broadband came, AOL users left in droves.
Oh, and don't forget their 'free trials', where you would be unable to cancel and your credit card would get charged on day 31.
