Where does all this money they're losing come from?

If they've been losing money hand over fist for the last three years, what's keeping them in business? Further borrowings? Milking their shareholders? Offering more shares, possibly diluting their existing shareholders' equity? Cash reserves that I was sure they didn't have?

If it's something I haven't even thought of, not being an accountant, that won't surprise me either.

Its nice to see the little green machine making money again, your spirits must be eiding pretty high, you've settled with intel, paid a few bills and are actually turning a profit and gained a little market share to boot, now lets get out there and make some descent CPUfs!

It comes from the capital accumulated in the past 25 years. AMD basically destroyed itself during the last seven to nine years. And it seems it did not get much better after the GF spinoff.

Certainly computer manufacturers should support AMD by buying from them in a strategic fashion, as they will otherwise pretty soon will have a single option: Intel. Guess what it will do then ?

Another option might be IBM buying AMD and dropping both POWER and S/390 development and then putting all their effort into x86. But IBM left all high-volume hardware business some time ago, so that is improbable.

I guess no one read the article relating to the settlement from Intel. It quite clearly stated that most of that settlement went to practically paying down/off all debts.

  The article also states that occurred in Q4 '09, so they managed to survive most of the 12 quarters without it. This also isn't the first period of extended losses they've had.

Apple In Talks to Use AMD CPUs and GPUs

According to heise.de Apple is interested in buying AMD CPUs and graphic processors:

As written before, it is in the best interest of PC/Mac/Server manufacturers to have more than one supplier for a core element of their products. Letting AMD die would expose them to another monopoly in addition to MS.

Actually, it would make sense for HP, Dell, Oracle, IBM and Apple to simply acquire the majority of AMD shares and then post some of their best technology managers to AMD in order to clean up that mess.
