    It's pretty easy, actualy.

    Give manglement exactly what they ask for (note the "exactly" ... it's important).

    It'll crash & burn, they get a black eye, and you look good picking up the pieces.

      The gateway to BOFH heaven

      Bosses want the latest non-standard device? Of course they can have it. But it will need to go through a rigourous, fast-track, testing process, i.e. you and your PFY get them too. And there isn't the knowledge to support them internally so this lucrative work will have to be outsourced to that third party you just set up. Then there's the blackmail potential of tracking usage...

    You missed a third approach

    Put contracts out on the most stupid of the high-level managers. That should buck up their neuron firing a bit.

    Good Senior Managers

    ..will only need a standard laptop with decent specs. Nothing fancy, as their main job is to communicate, not number-crunch.

    First and foremost, a general manager must be able to communicate with lots of people inside and outside. The nitty-gritty analysis and reporting should be delegated to assisstants. If not, something is wrong with the "senior" guy/girl.

    So if she can (safely) read Email, surf the web, create and look at office documents, her demands should be met.
