back to article Cultists aquiver as Applestore goes into hibernation

The Applestore went dead this morning, sending Mac cultists into a frenzy of speculation over what goodies Saint Steve might shower upon them later today. The store's petit mort came as just ahead of the opening of Macworld 2010 in San Francisco - not that Steve or anyone else from Apple plans to make an appearance there this …

    little death?

    Can web sites have orgasms?

      Re: little death?

      "Can web sites have orgasms?"

Considering the number of requests to buy Viagra and member-expanding drugs I receive every day, they're probably all faking it.

It's going to be the iMuppet!!!

It'll be kind of a cross between Kermit and Miss Piggy, but dressed in Beaker's Lab coat.

It'll have no battery life, a glossy screen, and everyone will buy one, because it'll have an apple logo on it's back.

mmmm iMuppet.... You know you want one...

    Offline?

Why is it necessary to take the store offline for an entire day to add new products? That doesn't sound like a very well-built store!

Unless, of course, this is all to generate extra publicity/hushed awe amongst the cultists. But only a cynic would think like that. ;-)

    Oh for goodness sake...

    ... don't start again!

You satirize the Apple faithful for their interest but The Reg follows up and publishes any minor rumour like a rabid wombat.

      Let's not start

While true, I think El Reg do it more for our amusement than to fan the flames of Appletarddom.

      i totally agree

I too am utterly sick of the constant hyperbole surrounding every little fart Jobs squeaks out, but, equally I'm just as sick of El Reg giving said flatulence coverage, please stop reporting these bloody non news stories. Once, just once,I'd like to go a day without reading apple related bollox.

AND there is, of course, the very real risk that we just come across as nothing more than petty kids writing off everything apple says just because we think their company is created by, and for, wankers. (which of course it is,but that's besides the point)

        So...

A day of downtime for a major retail site is not news then?

I find it pretty stunning that they have to bring the whole site down just to add products. So perhaps it's not news, it's amazement.

      2. Ben 42

        Simple answer

"Once, just once,I'd like to go a day without reading apple related bollox."

Have you considered not clicking on the clearly Apple-related articles? Problem solved.

    Umm, its a tuesday ..

.. and Apple usually do store updates on a Tuesday and fairly regularly in my experience .. yes there may be new kit coming out but probably related to updates to one or more of the following which are overdue (based on previous update cycles)

    Macbook Pro's

    Mac Pro's

    Macbook Air

Aperture 3 (press release has announced it)

    Non-cultists can more along.

    Much ado about nothing.

Back up, only change I can find is the release of Aperture 3.

    Tombo

I'd rather have a LARGER iPad than a smaller one. It's pretty small already. I don't consider it a pocket computer, that's the iPhone. I consider it a couch computer to replace the laptop for sitting around the house surfing and whatnot.

    WTF?

    Hmmmm

The UK store has just come back and I can't spot any differences other than Valentines stuff. At least not as far as the MBP stuff is concerned. Is it me?

Move along nothing [new] to see here?

    and its back....

    Aperture ?

Whoop de doo. Second dissapointment in as many weeks. They're on a roll.

And. Their store sofware must be pretty useless if they need to bring it down to add a product.

    1. shadowphiar

      bringing the store down

It got them an article in El Reg, didn't it?

I doubt there would have been this much fanfare if the update had appeared without three hours of downtime first.

    Welcome

    back now...

Nothing obviously new that I can see. Mind you, if Macbooks had dropped 50 quid I wouldn't know...

    Go

    Just Aperature 3

Yup, just new software. Other than that, some new graphics, cleaned up outdated "new" tags, fixed the "order by" date on iPods for Valentine's day to be not yesterday, that's it.

Aperture itself is an awesome program, but i have not yet had the desire to spend $179 on it (teacher discount, normally $199). We're getting 2 new cameras this year, and that will probably change my outlook, but I'll probably hold off and get iLife/iWork 10 and Aperture all at the same time.

      Considered apeture..

..then noticed that Bibble 5.0.1 was actually useful, and that I qualified for a free upgrade- and that runs on my Linux, MacOS and Windows boxes, which is hella handy.

Aperture is surprisingly nice, but I don't always want to be just tied to the Mac, given that I have colour corrected environments set up under all three...

    new announcement!

macbook users only allowed to use the app store and run one tiny iphone app in the middle of the screen at a time!

      Hardly

If El Reg didn't post these Apple stories I'd have no commentards to amuse me through out the day.

I think the term is called 'baiting' :)

Long Live El Reg and it's citizens!!
