back to article US book giant confirms Apple tablet

If there's anyone with an ounce of tech inquisitiveness who doesn't yet believe that Apple will announce a tablet Wednesday morning in San Francisco, take heed: it's just been preannounced by no lesser light than chairman, president, and CEO of publishing giant McGraw-Hill, Terry McGraw. Appearing Tuesday morning on CNBC's …

    What you didn't here..

What you didn't here (and miss quoted) is he called it "The Tabloid" twice.

The new Apple tablet will be called....Drum roll..

    "The Tabloid"

      Tabloid? No way... please...

Tabloid won't work in the UK, far too many negative connetations. Page three. Gutter press. Lies, damn lies and journalism... (sorry El Reg).

Also - Apple are busy registering iPad everywhere. As well as contesting the only pre-existing trademark application for iPad which is in the US.

Shame about the iPhone OS. I don't want a nailed-down device. I want OS X with touch capabilities. The other thing I'd like to see is a Mac dock so that I can use it as a second display.

      Tabloid? I wonder....

If it will only display hysterical shriekings about how we're all going to die tomorrow and pics of some non-celeb flashing her tits, then?

        Yes, but..

"If it will only display hysterical shriekings about how we're all going to die tomorrow and pics of some non-celeb flashing her tits, then?"

Yes, but it will be done on a kompuuuter so then it's true*.

(*) Not sure if the tits will be real, but that gives me another idea: maybe it comes with 3D support. That way, porn could *really* hurt your eyesight :-)

    Good point!

I was *so* looking forward to getting an Apple tablet, but the presenter brought up a deal breaker; *I* like to smell my books too!

    Wedensday Morning?

    Only on West Coast USA

In Europe, more like Wednesday Evening.

Unless Apple Folks get up at 3a.m.

    Too early

Think I've peaked too soon in my excitement re: Tabloids (really?). I'm now in the "I've got to get up early for work" phase. Tomorrow it will be unreturned phone calls. What I'm really not looking forward to is writing the lecture notes on "Why the tabloid failed" ....

    so they'll be removed then

"publishing giant McGraw-Hill" have pre-announced an apple delivery, so they'll be on steve's blacklist for a year or two.

i honestly think this will be a niche product amongst apple's stuff. will look nice but, like the g4 cube, will not be a mass consumer device unless there is a secret killer feature.

    1. Andrew James

      errrr

All of the features are secret... in that the device hasnt even been announced yet. It's nothing but speculation until Lord Jobs strokes it on stage later today

The Register is headquartered in London and San Francisco. So depending which particular vulture publishes the story, you will get a different opinion on what time of day it is.

    Yawn

The media hype is beyond ridiculousness. The new thing from Apple looks as if its going to be an iPhone with a bigger screen FFS. What a fucking bore. And as for running the same OS as the iPhone, is this supposed to be news? It would be news if Steve's new toy *didn't* run Mac OSX.

If this thing is going to be called Tabloid, I hope one of the models gets called Sun. Because the reporters and editors responsible for this hype think the sun shines out Steve's arse.

    Almost Thursday

So Apple will announce the iHype in the wee small hours, when respectable people have already adjourned to the pub and forgotten about the day's stresses and strains.

Ps. I've used Apple products for over 20 years but this is one I will not be buying.

    Jobsian death squads

If Apple does it's retaliation for leaks on a sliding scale, McGraw might be on the sharp end of Apples version of the Cult of the Assassin by lunchtime. "Excruciating death at the hands of a swivel-eyed fanboi wielding a sharpened Magic mouse, there's a app for that".

    Deal? What deal?

How likely is it that McGraw-Hill still have a deal with Apple after spilling the beans like that?

    1. JBH
      Thumb Down

      Very likely I'd imagine.

I'll bet you a pint that this is just the latest in a long line of cleverly engineered 'leaks' directed by Apple themselves, designed purely to get people talking and generate lots of that lovely free publicity.

      Classic Apple behaviour. YAWN!

    Anyone remember ...

    CD stacks

    Record collections

    And now bookracks?

All sitting nicely within a tiny bit of electronically managed, designed and effective bit of hardware.

    Space saver or what?

Now, to the home user that is probably a deal maker for sure but to enterprises with remit to store records for up to 7 years or health records for umpteen years might the Apple text book management system be rolled out to third party solution providers? Adobe are you listening?

    PDF with content management?

    WTF?

    Surely the REAL Question...

will The Register be publishing to the iPad / Tabloid / whatever? Get in early and you might find a whole slew of new readers.

  16. uhuznaa

    A bit off-topic...

I'm totally sick of the fact that in 2010 in the Word Wide Web still the majority of publications doesn't care for the fact that there are, like, time-zones and not all readers sit in the same one as you. Come on, is it that hard to have a tiny piece of code you throw a exact time specification and which returns dynamically a time delta instead? As in "in five hours from now"?

This is one of these things that show that all that fine technology is wasted if you don't use it in a way that makes things simpler instead of more complex. I mean, hardly any page in the web now is created as static HTML and having a function to use that adds a relative time count to such things shouldn't be harder than writing one line of code.

    'loid rage

If it is labeled "tabloid" does this mean they will go about hunting down everyone with an "-oid" at the end of their name? They have made a good go at taking down "i"-anything so perhaps the android folks should start popping steroids and looking over their shoulders. Frankly, all this hype is a bit of a hemorrh-ipad.

    iPad

If it's good enough for IBM ("Thinkpad") it should be good enough for Apple...

And I have no doubt that Apple will come with something really great that is lightyears ahead of the competition. And I also have no doubt that all the Apple haters will come out of the woodwork and tell the world that tap-water is totally fine to drink and no one needs that new thing "tea", which is basically just water anyway and much too expensive and will be an epic fail.
