back to article SGI inks deal for Tasmanian cluster

Supercomputer maker Silicon Graphics has inked a deal to build the Tasmanian Partnership for Advanced Computing - which has the rap name TPAC - at the University of Tasmania on the eponymous Australian island state. The gig: creating a new x64-Linux cluster for climate research. The TPAC facility is a partnership between the …

    Ha

    Being a former UTas student, it's good to see they are getting a decent machine for this, should return some interesting results

    No doubt

    they'll find a concrete link with human activity so as to back up the milky bar kid's ETS ambitions.

    Puters in Tassie?

    But they don't get the leccy on until 2015 !

    What's the point?

    When the results are a foregone conclusion, what is the point of buying a machine like this? We already know that previous data has been "corrected" by Winston Smith's colleagues at the Ministry of Climate Truth. Any deviance between results and forgone conclusions only points out that the model is wrong, and will be corrected posthaste.

    Seriously?

    Since when is a 64 node dual socket cluster newsworthy? There are clusters larger than this turned out by 3-20 person companies around the world every month. SGI+Rackable is an example of 2+2=1.5

    "concrete proof"

    @mark 65: the "concrete link [ of global warming, I assume you mean?] with human activity" was unequivocally demonstrated many years ago. If you don't know that, you really aren't qualified to comment. May I suggest David Archer's free online lectures on climatology 101?

    http://geoflop.uchicago.edu/forecast/docs/lectures.html

    (There's an accompanying textbook aimed at reasonably numerate non-specialists at the undergrad level: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Global-Warming-Understanding-David-Archer/dp/1405140399/ Both highly recommended. In particular Chapter 1 covers the basic thermodynamics of the CO2 greenhouse mechanism, which is something almost never explained in "Intro to AGW" material aimed at people lacking knowledge of basic physics or mathematics.)

    @Brian Miller Which institution awarded you your PhD? What was it's subject? (Obviously you must have doctorate-level knowledge of the field to be able to make such as sweeping statement. Otherwise, you'd just be some no-nothing wingnut who would prefer to believe in conspiracy theories than accept something that you think might affect your standard of living, and I'm sure El Reg wouldn't run a comment like that.)

      Climate Model

      @Tom Paine

      At last !

      A computing facility powerful enough to run the AGW models backwards in time to explain the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age !

    Global Warming?

    @Tom Paine

    Not everybody with a PhD has to believe in Global Warming:

    31,478 American scientists, including 9,021 with PhDs have signed a petition stating that Global Warming is a farce:
