Finally. Neelie Kroes finally can state why she opposes a merger over MySQL, a free product Sun's competitors can download, improve, and then compete against Sun with. As a Sun employee, we can only hope she finally states why this is anti-competitive to the European software market. Turncoat Monty Windenius' 9 month old company only has 15 people working for it, so that is not much of a European database competitor to protect. This glacial 7 month "review" to just get to the point of deciding what bothers Ms. Kroes is proof of why governments should not be involved with the private sector. Its tough to compete, especially when on of the competitors is a bureaucrat with no industry experience and no products. More of us at Sun will have to suffer while this EC review wastes everyone's time.

No, it just means that there won't be enough left of Sun or its customers to be worth caring about. Not that Eurotwats like Kroes have ever cared about such mundane things on their march towards total power and control.
After the EC gets done with Oracle & Sun - MySQL will have lost so much mind share from Oracle & Sun from FUD that no one will want to use it, anyway... a year of this bull is a long time to wait in a market where significant leaps are made in months.

I would of thought this reaction would be obvious. I'm surprised they haven't raised more of an issue with Java than MySQL. With Oracle basically owning two of the biggest JVMs out there(Jrockit and Sun), the main one left is IBM.
divest Java and MySQL and take the rest if they please.
Sun began killing MySQL once they bought them, the mass exodus of MySQL talent from the company should of told you that ages before Oracle ever announced their intentions. I believe at least one of not two forks of MySQL were started before Oracle did anything either.
As someone who has used Sun equipment since 1985, been an employee twice (still one at the moment), I'd like to know what right the EU has to put thousands of peoples jobs in jeopardy.
This is manifestly not benefiting Sun; what benefit is it to the EU? This is a pure power play by an EU that wants to prove to the US (and world) that Europe is a force to be reckoned with.
Given that Oracle could complete the merger in the US, the only loosers would the the various European governments who would have to finance the newly unemployed.... (one can speculate)
