back to article Aussie Sex Party in evangelist head-to-head

The stage is set for an epic confrontation this weekend, as Christian evangelists and members of the Australian Sex Party go head to head on Mount Ainslie near Canberra. The story began back in August, when radical Minister Danny Nalliah blogged about disturbing goings-on atop Mount Ainslie, at a site overlooking the Federal …

Reminds me of my days in US college

We had an evangelistic cretin coming on campus and preaching from the steps of the campus "hub". After two days of cermons starting with words like "Whores and Whoremongers" a couple of students had enough and started to imitate him waving pieces of pizza instead of the bible. So the cretin brought some henchmen the next day and it all ended up with the provost instructing campus security to evict the lot (his methodist tolerance ran out).

However, I thought that such talebanic behaviour is typical of the USA. I am a bit surprised to see it in more moderate lands.

    Witches and wiccans

Speaking from Canberra, the local wiccan and pagan community are sure what rev danny was looking at was spilt red wine rather than blood.

How they can be so sure is a very different question. But it's a popular spot for kids to hang out at night.

Rev danny this week also declared that the push for an australian bill of rights was proof of satan's influence over the parliament.

It's going to be a very interesting afternoon up on the top of the hill.

This is where being a religious person could be an embarrassment. Witches and satanic sacrifices ? Come on. There may be a bunch of nutters who think they are seriously trying to invoke the spirit of Belial or whatever is rad at the moment in those circles, but if invoking spirits was something that worked the world would be awash with angry protoplasms doing ugly things.

If there really is blood spilled in large quantities somewhere, I would prefer someone contact the police and leave the matter to the professionals. If there has been grievous bodily harm done, the victim is entitled to justice, not some ridiculous "spiritual assault" ceremony.

    Who are they following?

If these evangelists purport to have faith, and they feel opposed or oppressed by these so-called "witches", perhaps they should actually follow the path Jesus called them to:

"You're familiar with the old written law, 'Love your friend,' and its unwritten companion, 'Hate your enemy.' I'm challenging that. I'm telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty."

They might also bear in mind that the religious right of the day branded Jesus a heretic and hated him for this message. Who are they aligning themselves with - the institutions that hated Jesus or the so-called "rejects" he loved and spent time with.

    The truth

I've always thought of Wiccans and other neo-pagans as pretty much "fringe", but I'll make this concession: at least they're harmless, unlike the crazies among the fundamentalists. Talk about a lunatic fringe! They make the Wiccans and their ilk look quite middle of the road.

I must add that many fundamentalist beliefs are actually not Christian in any sense. The fundies generally have a very poor understanding of the Bible and are blindly unaware of the many contradictions, ambiguities, and lacunae in the text. A classic example is "prosperity theology" which asserts that God will favor believers by giving them riches on this earth. Meanwhile, Christ himself pointed out that the rich will have a difficult time getting into heaven.

Also notably absent from fundie ravings are charity, love of their fellow man, and similar virtues.

I can't help but think that the fundies' obsession with how other people have fun, particularly when it comes to sex, demonstrates that they have very dirty minds obsessed with sex - normal people take sex as simply part of life and don't waste their time obsessing over it at all.

Sickening hypocrites, one and all: that's the fundies.

The Australian version is especially disgusting.

Did the IDiots (I would bet they are fans of "intelligent" design too) ask themselves the following simple questions?

    - was that really blood?

    - even if yes, was that from a ritual/sacrifice?

    - is it possible that some kid is having some practical joke time?

And shouldn't the fundies in question get in trouble with the police? Did they report that to the police for investigation? What if it is human blood after all and maybe evidence of a crime?

Oh, well. I guess that asking for displays of intelligence from these people is asking for too much.

The easist way to point out the idiocy of evangelical Christians is ...

... to ask them which version of "creation" they believe in; The version beginning at Genesis 1:1, or the completely different version beginning at Genesis 2:4 ... They always kind of slink away when confronted with the cold harsh reality that their "Bible" is flawed ... and flawed right from the git-go, no less.

Get a life you stupid people! Did anyone actually test the alleged stain for blood. Was it human? If animal, could it not be just be an ordinary animal killing another animal for food? When ever you see something you don’t understand do you all say “It must be a sign from God” if it’s positive to your beliefs or “A sign of satanism” if you don’t like what you see. Do you never consider that the “sign” could have a simple explanation. You’re all a bit like the crop circle believers who think aliens have landed when the simple explanation is that it being done by humans to generate a bit of income for the farmers or just as pure vandalism/art.

I doubt that it will appear, but at least the moderator will read it.

    What are you afraid of?

So someone sees blood on a stone up a mountain and decides to organise a prayer meeting about it. What's the problem?

If there's nothing in it, it's just a bunch of people talking to someone who doesn't exist and no harm done. If there is something in it, they're praying about the blood-shedding on a mountain and not about gays and people shagging what they shouldn't be shagging.

It sounds like the Sex Party are jumping on something for the sheer spite of it, nothing more. They're the first to complain when religious people turn up at their shingdings and shout nasty things. And their choice of alternative is interesting; they hate a religion that says what they do is wrong and prefer one that would kill them for it?

Why do they even care? They should be worrying about the fundamentalists lobbying in government buildings, not those having prayer meetings up a mountain, unless those prayer meetings are to a real person who can actually do something.... and the Sex Part people are afraid?

Sounds like the Sex Party want to remove the rights of people to worship freely, even if that worship (or praying or whatever) is up a remote mountain where nobody can see them.

"There's no older or more disputed rivalry than between Christians and non-Christians. "

Well, except for pretty much every other religious dispute. Relatively speaking, your cult, sorry, religion is relatively recent, being only 2 millennia old or so. If you were to take a quick look at the region where your cult started, you'll find that Jews and Muslims, for example, have been killing each other over whose god is bigger than whose for longer than that. Throw into the mix all sorts of ancient religions, such as Baal worship, which is mentioned in your bible, so by definition must predate it, and you might find that your starting statement is a little specious.

Also, you might find you are taken a little more seriously if you can grasp the concept of a paragraph.

Finally, to respond to, "Let's hope El Reg is open minded enough to let a Christian and their point of view to be permitted on the site. You do realise (being Irish and all, I'm sure you must, what with your genetic knowledge of all things pagan... *rolls eyes*) that Samhain and Beltaine are linked to the progression of the Sun, not the (modern, Christian - Gregorian, as in Pope Gregory) calendar?

From what (little) reading I've done on it, both are either on, or on the nearest lunar cycl start to, the "cross-quarter days" marking the mid-point between an equinox and a solstice, with Beltane (and I believe the spelling is disputed, especially since the Druids didn't use our current, Latin alphabet) being between Vernal Equinox and Summer Solstice, and Samhain being between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice.

But do correct me if I'm wrong, you are Irish after all.
