Would be nice
The last few Bond themes have been a rather like caricatures of Bond themes, rather than real Bond themes. Muse certainly have the pomp sensibilities to make a good go of it.
British rock band Muse have told the BBC they'd like the chance to have a go at the next James Bond theme. Drummer Dom Howard told Auntie: "It's something we'd probably say yes to, or at least give it a good go. Certainly some of our music fits with the James Bond vibe - and I think it could work." He added: "The last few …
I'd like the chance to have a go at the next James Bond theme, too. So? Unless the producers ASK them if they'd like to, how is this news?
I'm not denying they're a good band, but I'm not sure why the press are climbing over each other to report this. I'm sure there's lots of bands who would like to do the Bond theme.
I think if they were to do a Bond theme it would steer into Supermassive Black Hole territory, which is just not cricket. I would like to hear them have a stab at it, but i find Muse's music is generally either too heavy, too dark or too uplifting to be a Bond theme.
That said, if Another Way To Die can make it as a Bond theme then i suppose any turd can.
There was a Facebook petition (and you know things are getting series when there's a Facebook petition) before the last Bond film was released to have Muse do the title track. I was hoping the film studio would go for it, but still.
I'd love to see Muse do a Bond theme, especially if they'd do it anything like the album released this week. Bond themes should be epic, sweeping, and uplifting with a hint of darkness. There hasn't been a good one since 'The World is Not Enough' IMO. The most recent ones have been completely forgettable.
This is news? Every bloody time there's a Bond film in gestation, someone whose back catalogue needs a boost badges themselves as touted to do the theme. A few weeks later there's the official announcement that it ain't happening after all. Both pieces are published extensively, a few records are sold and the PR boys high-five and go for beers down the pub*.
Last time Amy Whinehouse, this time Muse. Next time the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band?
*Or funny-named cocktails with little umbrellas in a bijou and exclusive winebar, more like.
...from when I used to sit in business studies classes with them at school.
Well done to them I say, I'm not their biggest fan (I do like one of two if their songs) but hey it's got to be better than Amy Winehouse. :-)
Not to mention they put the sleepy town of Teignmouth on the map.
Rob
BTW, where's the IT or Paris Hilton angle?
I certainly reckon Muse should give it a whirl. It would be an interesting musical experiment, if nothing else. However, someone will have to restrain Matt Bellamy, so he doesn't steamroller in some sci-fi-armageddon-apocolypse-conspiracy-doom-laden undertones into the track.
I suggest a Straight Jacket, and liberal applications of Chloroform. He'll be just about lucid enough to still be musically brilliant, but in a way that suits the Bond ethos.
was abysmal, and I haven't the faintest ideas as to what the latest one sounded like. Die Another Day was memorable, but only because it had scorpions in the video and Bond actually losing.
They really need to have a go at doing a "proper" Bond film. Fine, have Quantum instead of the infinitely cooler sounding Spectre. Have him as an early agent rather than a Roger Moore-esque expert in armed and unarmed combat, liquid-helium cooling systems and how to make women lust after you before you've got round to saying "hello". But make it a proper Goldfinger-quality Bond film. Goldeneye would do.
As for Muse, I think they could do a fantastic Bond theme.
Whoever does it, most of the comments will be about how it doesn't sound like a Bond theme.
No mention of what a Bond theme should be, and ignore the fact that only a handful have ever fit their criteria. Usually they complain because it doesn't have enough horns or a Shirley bassey soundalike, but they'd complain if that happened too.
"What's wrong with starting anew?"
A Quantum Of Solace was definitely a break from the past, and all the better for it. I've heard that the next Bond might be the bloke who plays Stringer Bell in the Wire (like Dominic West he's a Brit by birth), which would be very interesting. As for the music, I'm not a fan of Muse, but would infinitely prefer them to the limited talents that are the Killers.
Sarah's a Maiden fan? Now I officially lust after her! :)
That's actually a damn good idea, since they're one of the few hard-rock/metal groups who know how to construct a more complicated tune than your basic "Am-G-F-C" kind of thing. Even better, could we get Bruce Dickenson to play one of the baddies? Then they could work up a swordfighting sequence (Bruce being an ex-Olympic fencer) which would be very cool indeed.
FWIW, I thought the last two Bond songs were OK, except for the presence of Alicia Keys. You want tinkly fluffy pop without any evident talent, Alicia Keys is yer gal. You want something with a bit of an edge, you've wasted your time. I still don't know why Jack White couldn't get sister Meg to do it instead - she'd have suited it much better.
"So, I think if you can find a director you can really relate to, and it's a great film, and you know you can work well together, then it could be a possibility."
Despite Brosnan's efforts, Bond jumped the shark a while back, and I believe they've even run out of books on which the films are ever so loosely based. I know the Entertainment Committee of the Britards (the shiny trend-surfing national media) needs to have everyone gawping in the same direction for maximum indoctrinatory effect, but Muse should look elsewhere for decent projects rather than pander to such self-indulgent patriotic pap that has the cinema-going Britard giving the film three thumbs up, no matter how awful it is. ("'Cause it's Bond, innit?")
Black Snow, The Claw, Robot Tourist, One Way Ticket, Mystery Man... it doesn't get much better, or funnier sometimes.
It was a shame Duran Duran went out of fashion after they did their Bond theme, but it might be worth it if the same thing happened to Muse.
And no-one's mentioned New Order yet? But what about Gang of Four, who seem to still be around.
I thought doing a Bond theme was a kiss of death for a band's career - Aha, Duran Duran, Garbage, Sheena Easton.
OK, there's a couple of exceptions - Madonna and Shirley Bassey spring to mind, but they were already too huge to fail.
So while I think Muse are a great band, I'd rather see the Arctic Monkeys do the theme, then sink to obscurity!
Godspeed You Black Emperor! would more than fill anyone's post-Canadian punk boots, particularly a couple of tracks on Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To The Heaven (the names of which are currently evading me like a middle eight on a Boards of Canada track).
But that veers into dangerously progressive territory. In short: anything but Brat-pop.
