back to article Walmart goes green with solar build-out

Walmart is adding five more stores to its solar-energy pilot program - but not because management's turned into a bunch of tree-hugging Arkansas hippies. The megastore multinational is going green for the sake of green - money, that is. The five latest stores in Walmart's pilot program, which now totals 20 stores, Sam’s Clubs …

    It's not totally great...

...But it is a very good start from Walmart. Yes you can argue that when all the emissions coming from the manufacture from all the cheap stuff that they sell, is taken into account then it doesn't matter what Walmart do, but it is very encouraging to me to see that the companies are getting green just to make money. Makes my job so much easier....

    WTF?

    But... but....

Surely, renewable energy is far more expensive than the fossil fuel flavour? And anyway, all this global warming malarkey's a conspiracy amongst tree-huggers, bogus "scientists" and miserablist English winge-rockers to get lots of fat grant money and send us all back to the stone age, right? It must be, because Andrew Orlowski told us so, and of course one random IT hack knows more about it than any number of so-called "climatologists"?

buys offset credits equivalent to 1.3 billion kWh

For a total saving of 0 kWh.

That depends where the Offset Credits go.

Offsetting is one of the most wasted opportunities of recent years.

If it's spent replacing many coal stations with something better then there is a saving somewhere,

anyone with a GCSE math's could see that. If there's a plus somewhere and a minus elsewhere, they work to cancel each other out. Maths don't care where it is.

    offset credits ?

How does this help ? Surely they are still using the power, which still comes from fossil fuels.

What happens to the money they pay for these 'credits' ?

    Welcome

    Vive La France

A supermarket in the South of France has converted its car park to be covered with solar panels.... not only are they harnessing the sun's power but it stops your car catching on fire from the intense summer heat (if only we had the same problem here in Blighty!)

http://www.ecolo-wizz.com/?p=761 (it's in French but the picture is pretty)

A/C because I'm supposed to be working.

    @Tom Paine

Renewables can be "resonably" inexpesnive IF and only IF conditions are right.

Solar panels in very sunny places = good power output = Higer ROI

Solar panels in not so sunny places = average power out put = Lower ROI

Windfarm in exposed places = good power output = Higher ROI

Home windturbines in a city = pathetic power output = NO ROI

So it's a case of Location, Location, Location.
