Linux Foundation urges fans to sign up to Visa credit card

I'll not get one

Not because I don't want it, but because I run very low credit bills and pay them off every month; I am not a profitable customer.

UK ? When?

Although to be a true linux afficionado, one must treat this with scathing contempt (see previous posts) ... but am I the only one who would get this at a drop of a hat once it comes to the UK.

Kindly note that the card is issued by UMB Bank through CardPartner. It is only branded Visa, which company (a) doesn't exert significant influence on issuers' and processors' partnership decisions, and (b) does actually use Linux and various other open source software packages.

So let me get this straight. The people who brought about the global economic crisis by lending money to people with no way of repaying are now pitching credit cards to people who dont like paying?.

I suppose we have had the can't pay, might as well have the wont pay.

Besides, what on earth is a linux fanboy going to buy with his linux credit card. All his software is open source, all his music is from piratebay, all his friends are online and anything he buys to work with his computer will probably be only compatable with windows or a mac. That only leaves using it to pay for porn in which case why not drop the act and dump the penguin and put a pair of tits on the front of the card instead.

Anyhow, as its a linux credit card will it arrive as a blank plastic card and you have to program the chip and stripe and put the picture on the front yourself? Will you be able to go to visa for help doing this or will you have to spend hours trawling through internet news groups full of countless posts asking how its done but scant all sign of any answers?

I'm puzzled...

In the light of this revelation, I rushed over to NetCraft to see what OS / software Visa's web server was using. The results were highly suspicious - Microsoft's IIS 7.0, allegedly running on a Linux box...

Given that IIS 7.0 apparently only runs on Windoze Server 2003 and Vista, methinks someone's telling Netcraft porkies...

I spend more money on stuff than you (my clients appreciate the quality of my work and pay accordingly) and I'm not quite as fascinated by tits as you seem to be. So, why don't you fuck off, and fork over some more of your paltry financial resources to your favourite convicted criminal.

I don't think either stereotype really fits the majority of people.

I use Linux because it is UNIX like, because of the intellectual freedom, and also because it's not encumbered by someone trying to extract as much money as possible from me as often as possible. This is not being a freetard, merely financial prudence. I have in the past paid for Linux distros before the Internet was fast. And I buy all my media unless P2P is the *ONLY* way to get it as a last resort (mainly deleted titles). And I waited a long time until Amazon got their MP3 store up and running (usable from Linux - Horay) before doing anything other than ripping CD's and LP's for music.

And I have credit cards. Mainly because (shock, horror) I have a family (a real one, with kids and all) and I need to even out money flow sometimes. Might consider swapping one to get one with TUX in my pocket. Might not though...

well...

Using this in an Apple store or PC World would give you funny looks...

Nay Visa did not bring us the credit crisis

Visa is only a credit processor. Such that they transfer details to said banks, send authorize to the merchants system, and skim a percentage off the top for the privilege. Blaming them for credit problems is like blaming the publisher for a bad book.

Oh and mitthf - IIS7 runs on Windows 2008 Server only. Nice to see you can skip knowing the technology but can happily modiy the wording to slate it. Congrats

visa do these for all sorts of orginisations/companys its a business deal. it's a similar deal to what the lola F1 team had mid 90's as well as things like dog trusts etc.

doesn't mean visa employee's drive f1 cars or look after dogs so chill out mmmmkay.

Unless I can do this...

* The freedom to improve the card, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the bank vault is a precondition for this.

Who says Linux users don't pay for things? Do we get out PCs, laptops, netbooks, phones, portable media players, and other gadgets free as well as our OS? Damn, and all this time I've been using a credit card.

My very first credit card (when I was 18) was one of these, an MBNA Canada Mastercard that, despite the fact that linuxfund now has links with Visa, apparently still makes the requisite transfers to the company....

If you want support Linux, get the software and use it. Buy a t-shirt to show everyone, if you want, the merchandise profits may help thre foundation, the t-shirt will be seen by all and sundry more often.

Is this pointless card really going to stir up your average person to dump windows and try something new? No!

Is the average shop assistent going to suddenly start a conversation about the latest release of Gnome/KDE? 1 in 50,000, maybe?

Linux people get this: 98% of people who use PC's don't give a toss what's on it, so long as the browser ( preferably IE on Windows ) gets to Facebook, Youtube, the news site of choice and Hotmail/GMail and the PC can run iTunes to get ripped off music on their iPod, they simply don't care! Let me repeat that for the Linux hard of hearing, THEY DO NOT CARE! OK?

( I use Linux day in day out as Unix SA/Oracle DBA and I use an Apple Mac at home, so don't start flaming me as a fanboir baiter! )
