back to article Apple grapples with wave of filth

Apple has again been caught out by an app that delivers content from outside Cupertino's control - this time it's naked pics of girls puportedly as young as 15 using a social networking application. The app concerned, BeautyMeter, is one of the familiar hot-or-not style applications, where users can upload their own pictures …

    WTF?

kiddie porn direct to your phone

So it there going to be any prosecutions over this.

One: Are the girls that posted the pics going to have a visit from a law agency.

Two: The users of this system. Have they deleted/forwarded/printed any of these pictures.

Three: Apple distribution of child porn.

Thoughs of Operation Ore spring to mind.

Ho Ho Ho everybody is laughing but isn't this just the social stigma of child porn being watered down. What next pictures of children at nursery school.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It

Apple is only beginning to feel the real world. Standby Steve, the worst is yet to come.

We all would do well to invest in those companies that produce nose-wiping tissue; Apple's fanboys are just beginning to cry and the tears to come will be a veritable flood.

Have multimedia capabilties, will deliver smut

Basically if a platform can serve video or pictures, somehow pr0n will get onto it. It's not so much getting the genie back in the bottle put persuading him/her not to insert it and use the camera...

    Useless without pics

So, only purportedly underage. Means nothing, plenty of girls out there pretending to be younger. And it's not porn without fucking. This is nudity. Personally I think if people want to stick naked pictures of themselves on the web they should go right ahead.

    Safari

So... Apple will be banning Safari then because it could be used to view smut?

    No Surprises

Human ingenuity is matched only by it's capacity for cruelty, as someone once said.

It doesn't matter what you do, if you want free flowing information then you're going to come up against this sort of thing. The internet itself should be perfect proof of that.

All you can do is stomp it out, but also hope that someone has the sense to follow up and chase down the people responsible (which is unlikely to happen, at least in public view).

    Stop

    Yet again...

    ...the point is missed.

It's not Apple's fault people are misusing a means of communication. It's possible to send child porn through the post - should the Royal Mail be prosecuted as a provider of child porn?

People need educating - if the kids are stupid enough (and think this is acceptable behaviour) then the pictures being distributed/"used" for nefarious means serves them right. You cannot protect people from their own stupidity, nor should you try most of the time.

On the other hand, these "hot-or-not" type things are really asking for this kind of trouble

    18's only

wyh can't apple just put a 18 certificate on the app and say that the content has nothing to do with them?

    El Reg

Perhaps Apple will pull all the RSS readers, and other news grabbers since they could be used to display inappropriate third party content.

El Reg regularly publishes articles of a dubious IT nature (Paris?), and I'm fairly sure the NSFW in the title probably triples the read rate. Now I'm not suggesting El Reg would ever punt illegal material, but we all like free Boobies :)

    And the odd lesbian/Lesbian story

(I just added that for the shock value)

May I commend you, sir, on delivering that line in the context of a story about pr0n without a hint of irony.

    Well below?

Well below the age of consent? Users "as young as fifteen" (a) could just mean that one girl out of hundreds was fifteen and sneaked in there. (b) That isn't "well below the age of consent." She could be a couple of weeks below the age of consent and still be 15. (Your country may vary).

Mines the one where the iPhone's been nicked from the pocket by a dodgy pervert.

    RE: Well below?

    1) In some (most?) US states, the age of consent is 18.

    2) Models in pornographic pictures have to be at least 18.

    Fake?

A commenter on another site pointed something out, the (censored) image purportedly showing a naked 15-year-old doesn't look right. The pic doesn't fit the frame like in the other examples. I don't know enough about the app to say for sure that a picture couldn't display that way, but It does look a little suspicious. Though the article on Wired implies they were able to independently verify the picture's existence.
