back to article Viviane Reding sees talking yoghurt pots

The EU yesterday published an action plan to promote the Internet of Things, listing fifteen action points that the EU thinks could promote the use of internet connections in everything from yoghurt pots to trees. Increased connectivity is a forgone conclusion: RFID tags are getting everywhere these days and while it might be …

    variation in parsing

At the risk of being the 20th poster to point this out by the time the mods let it through...

[the plan states that "consumers are increasingly using... mobile phones equipped with cameras and/or employing Near-Field Communications", which comes as a surprise to us, as we've yet to see a single person with an NFC-equipped handset outside a trade show, trial, or Nokia office.]

    This could be read as...

consumers are increasingly using mobile phones equipped with cameras...

    (and/or)

consumers are increasingly employing Near-Field Communications...

in which case they are probably referring to Oyster.

    Germany censors EU sites

Germany passed its filter, and without an EU exception.

By definition if a site isn't taken down in the EU then it can't CANNOT be kdy prn. The censors claim MUST BE FALSE. Yet German will block them anyway. The sites owner in another EU country will not be informed (the censorship is secret) and there will be no process to prevent the censorship of a legal site and no way for the site owner to sue for the false slur the German censor has made.

Isn't the EU supposed to IMPROVE communications, IMPROVE trade, LOWER barriers? Then why do you let censor nazi make a false claim like that unchallenged???

How can you permit a spurious false claim IN SECRET by a tiny group of a few censors to be made in one country against a site hosted in another EU country?

This will spread you know, it will be spread to general speech, on the grounds of 'hate speech'. A nice catch phrase, but one loaded with political bias, so the censor will censor what he hates.

Look at the Iran-EU thing, they are normal people, they want a say in their government, yet because communications is blocked both ways (by language barriers, by propaganda from MEMRI, and by censorship by their own Mullers) there is a barrier there and leaders don't think twice about bombing them.... i.e. free communications is essential, and fragmentation leads to wars.

So it is important not to go into a moral panic and forget how important it is to protect legal communication.

    Near Field Communications

NFC in this case could be being used by them as fancy catch-all that includes Bluetooth and WiFi. All politicians need to be hit over the head with a technical glossary at regular intervals.

What's the environmental impact of all the RFID tags?

For example, the silicon in RFID tags can cause defects when recycling glass.

I thought that the doping materials used in semiconductors are considered so unpleasant that the EU wishes to keep electronic waste to a minimum. If an RFID tag is attached to a yoghurt pot, doesn't that make it electronic waste?

    Wouldn't a bar-code be better?

    Cheaper and more environmentally friendlier.

    IPv6

    Are we there yet?

It does seem very obscure. And few people seem to even bother with the possible use.

At least I'm using NAT on my router.

It makes more sense to push IPv6 than mess around with DAB.

a very odd stance in your personal oppinion reporting there Bill Ray ?

thats a very odd stance to take in your personal oppinion reporting there Bill Ray ?

as is clear you know the properetys of the wireless tech the EU paper draws attention to as you report on this stuff all the time looking back at your prior prublications....

the paper seems perfectly clear enough, its main topic is "personal Data" the collection of it, the protections of it, and the users/owners right to restrict their data collection from 3rd partys being transmitted from these current and upcoming generic wireless device SOC to track your every move and actions werever you might be at the time.

the references to the "the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party" and the "key aspect to building trust"

"is the capability to adjust the functioning and properties

of technological systems to individual preferences (within safe boundaries). Studies31 have shown that giving users a sufficient level of control improves their level of trust and plays an important role in the uptake of the technology."

should have been a clue to you, or are you brind to the future risks of personal data security and a persons ability to profit from their datastreams property directly should a 3rd party seek to grab that personal datastream, be it DPI ,wireless leakage of all kinds including the outlined in the paper you refer to ?

i wonder how differently might Chris Williams and his greater enlightened, understanding of CURRENT data protection in the greater EU perspective might have reported this exact same EU paper you reference, and build your personal oppinion copy around !

it seems your a tech junky at heart, and have no time to contemplate the far wider, data security and personal profit from YOUR data perspective, against the un-hindered "commercial piracy" of your unique data streams in what ever up and coming fashion, for any commercial 3rd party profit.

EU could and SHOULD mandate these other good v6 things

as you say Dave Bell, it does make far more sense to help push "IPv6" and its other good attributes.

infact id say the EU could and SHOULD mandate these other good ipv6 things , such as Force all EU ISP's including Uk virgin Media and BT etc, to finally include the Multicast protocol as the genrric base standard.

all the way to, and from the end users already Multicast certifyed CPE broadband kit sat on your homes desks right now, AND stop the worlds ISPs filtering off this valueble protocol to the last mile as they do now with Ipv4.

IPv6 is NOT just about more Ip address, but you already know this Bill Ray, being the tech reporter you clearly are.

from the users and small local business plan perspective yes,but...

    Cheaper and more environmentally friendlier.

    "

from the users and small local business plan perspective perhaps yes, but not the grobal commercial profit of your data from 3d party darknets, such as the credit reference agences Phorm and like minded peoples plans to monitise eachand every bit of your digital data flow property,

theres nothing like a good collection of unseen micro wireless devices and SOC (system On a Chip) data as you and all your sheeple go about their day working to pay their taxes to buy the products these RFID tags are attached to, and collecting a sharing said data....

ask any Govt paper pusher just how they love the new up and coming UK digital age, and the many 3rd party databases filling up with obscure and yet seen as valueble data inthe greater collective, for the primary UK services industrys (out sourced to other 3rd partys to save they cash outlay OC) UK PLC hope will finally come to pass and save our lower ranked country rating as the old industrial revolution in the north west did once before for the NW banking enrichment, now moved to the south and london OC.

did someone not learn the long time lessons of the past, and and they seem to just think selling off the UK to the US and other non UK share holders was a good long term plan to re-invest in to the UK,

ohh wait, all the Uk generated cash isnt here anymore its in those other countrys doing good for their countrys instead.

NO real local UK innovation, No local industry, No real UK profits any more ,seems simple enough.

lets hope the EU people are better managers of our needs than the UK and for instance the manchester labour run Govt thats been left in power here so long, they seem to think they own YOU your data and the NW generally... but thats OT for this thread so....next

    How about the basics?

    1) Ensure the Telecoms Package (including Amendment 22 of UNiversal Service Obligation) excludes the net discrimination clauses.

    2) Support unambigiously the wishes of its citizens and European Parliament by supporting the removal of all references to three strikes.

    3) Better still as part of the conciliation process re-open the UNiversal Service Obligation package and re-write it around 24x7 location independent net access as opposed to focusing on maintaining telephone boxes .
