Builder Bradley Dean Milne, 33, was last month spotted in his ute (pick-up truck) "veering onto the wrong side of a busy Darwin road". A concerned motorist …

    I know what you mean! I have an Aussie friend who admits to drink driving on occasion but he makes out like it's no big deal. I think I'm finally starting to get through to him that it's really not okay but this is a culture that never should have started.

    Award.

    If he'd crashed and killed himself whilst being that stupid they should've given him an award... what to call it though?

    Ah, he's from Darwin, so my suggestion would be a "Darwin Award".

    Is that a euphemism??

    "indulging in a coupling which "continued for several kilometres"."

    @Winkypop

    A toyota hilux is also termed a ute and that's definitely a pick-up truck (as is a Navara and a Triton etc) so the translation stands. Holden utes are the strict preserve of tattooed fuck-knuckles.

    I mean, what kind of a prick buys a 6 litre lowered suspension work vehicle to drive to a building site? Proper tradies drive 4wd utes. Mind you, look at the company that makes them - Holden, a GM subsidiary. Keep the Govt cash coming eh?

    Regarding the story, he must be the first ute driver to not be a wanker.

    @winkypop & Aussie Drink Driving

    The SSV is a bit average. What you really want is a Maloo:

    http://www.hsv.com.au/cars/ESeries/maloor8/maloor8.asp

    But seriously, the attitude to drink driving in Australia (I moved from Berkshire to Queensland a few years ago) is shocking. In many circles, it's socially acceptable to drink and drive. If you don't get caught it's something to boast about to your mates.

    I tried finding some stats to back up my gut feel, but have run out of time. This is the most likely place to go:

    http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf/DetailsPage/1301.02008?OpenDocument

    http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/statistics/datatablespublications/accidents/casualtiesgbar/roadcasualtiesgreatbritain20071

    Either way, I'd love to know how to change society to see the danger in drink driving.

    @Winkypop

    Yes, that's a pick-up truck.

    Back to the article: did any part of the fine actually relate to the act that we are all interested in, or was it just for the alcohol and lack of seat-belt (sounds like he had a reasonable excuse - the girl on his lap would have stopped him from hitting the steering-wheel) and on that note, did she get in any trouble?
