back to article Taser use still plateau'd among firearms cops

The latest quarterly figures on English and Welsh police use of Taser electro-stun weapons have been released by the Home Office. Tasings overall are up as more plods tool up with the jolt-weapons; but use remains broadly steady among firearms teams, the only police to have been equipped with Tasers for long. Home Secretary …

"Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, about whom a distinct whiff of impending disaster seems to hang at the moment..."

That's a tad biased and irrelevant even for el reg's reporters. Whether it's true or not it has no bearing on this story.

Come on Jaqui, own up it's you isn't it.

Everyone else like shafting the government that shafting them.

Please can we have these confetti dispensers fitted onto the plods boots and truncheons? Perhaps it would slow down the use of them as well.

    Logging

I thought that the logging and "confetti" was only applicable when the taser was fired, ie, not in "gratuitous police torturings" where, presumably, you would do one of your common or garden "drive stuns".

    Actually, that's a good point.

How about a sticker dispenser, so if you get drive stunned you get a little gold star embossed with a unique ID stuck to your clothes?

Actually, given the current government it's more likely that they'd use "drive stun" to staple a £200 bill to your body. Then give the police incentives to drive-stun passers-by.

Good to see that they're using the "threaten" option rather than just reflexively tasering people, and it's good to see that they've not just gone out and tasered everyone who looked at them funny or was in posession of an offensive wife.

I mean I'd rather they weren't available, but at least they appear to be avoiding utterly excessive usage. We just need a police helmet-cam now and there'll be no worries about unneccesary police brutality.

Having a go at Jacqui Smith is always relevant.

I'd be surprised if the taser didn't log drive stuns, even if it probably won't be able to use the pretty coded confetti option in a drive stun.

As such, police torturing would cause a nice log of drive stuns (And some very agitated press, no doubt). Ofcourse, there's always the good ol' 12v battery option.

    who's statistics ?

and where did these statistics come from? the police authority? the government?

.. and we're really supposed to believe those numbers?

    Why bother with tasering

I do wonder how the police would react if you threw water on them and their taser if they threatened you? Even the dumbest of piggies must know that water and electricity are hardly a safe combination, and would think twice about using a taser when they are wet.

How about if you pour water (or better, saline) on yourself if threatened with one of these? I've seen talk of metal mesh lined clothing possibly making a taser useless, but how about wet clothing?

The figure you need to know is 6 metres. If you are further away than that, the cables will stop the darts short.

Jackboot Jacqui, bless 'er, said ...

"Tasers are making a real difference on our streets, not only keeping the public safe but also protecting our police officers,"

"When I walk down the street, people rush up to me and say; 'Jacqui, please can we have more police with tasers, more ID Cards and more porno on expenses?' And I say to them; well, yes, but it's 'please MAY we have ...'"

Looks like I'll have to step up my efforts to get a right royal electroshock tasering at the hands of plod.

Down here in Hampshire whenever I go out on a weekend the coppers on foot patrol with their tit-hats all have helmet cams, I think they're making them general issue here.
