"It's totally wrong to convict him... He was only expressing his political views. He should enjoy free speech."

He does know he's in China right??

    Geeez

No offence to anyone at all, but this China crap is pathetic.

It's not even a religion about this, just their government being sods when people don't like them.

    The Olympics

There was a recent editorial published in the Statesman (originally elsewhere) about the trouble that China was going to have when they are swarmed with journalists during the Olympics. They recently had a meeting where they laid down "ground rules" for what could and could not be published. Interestingly, she noted, "the Tianemen Square massacre was so taboo that it could not be listed as a taboo". Among the items was anything to do with Darfur. She also said that she suspected that there would be a lot of people deported during the Olympics, assuming they didn't get arrested outright.

If I was going, I'd get a t-shirt printed in Chinese that said "Only China can save Darfur". Ten minutes? Twelve? Not much more than that.

Does China Deserve to Host the Olympics?

This is why the world should boycott the Beijing Olympics.

China should not host the Olympics

Totalitarian dictatorships are by nature oppressive systems.

Weren't the Communists our arch enemies 20 years ago? And now we're all expected to turn a blind eye to the abuses by them, in the spirit of world togetherness and Olympic spirit?

As we all know, the only reason our governments are so chummy with the Communist Party that rules China is because they're keeping our economies running with cheap TVs and iPods.

If I know my history of Communist governments well (and I think I do!), we should expect the Chinese authorities to round up and "detain" any dissidents in the weeks before the Olympics.

When China becomes a democracy, then host the Olympics there! But not while this sort of thing is going on.

    Sense at last

hows competing to see which nation subjects are the most physicaly strong and fit (ie good soldiers) make the world more peacful i don't see.

They talk about olympic ideals but i just see the worlds largest free hospitality junket for the rich and powerful.

Glad to see some other people agree. Britian should not send a team to the Beijing olympics, to validate this obnoxious regime.

But those in power are to busy salivating over the growth and potential profits. It won't be long till they want to turn the rest of the worlf into China.

And let's not forget the poison toothpaste, lead-based paint on toys, small parts on toys that can be swallowed by small children, contaminated foods for both pets and people...

    That's what happens...

...if you're stupid enough to use Google or Yahoo in a country such as China...

Wouldn't surprise me if they'd turned him in.....wouldn't be the first time...

What I find amusing is that no one has expressed any sympathy for the laywer...
