Engineers, or technicians?
It seems more likely that Technicians will be going, and not Engineers, given that the CWU represents Technician grades. Shame on El Reg if it can't tell the difference...
BT says its new network technology, currently on trial in Wales, will allow it to slash its engineering staff by thousands. The 21st Century Network (21CN) fibre optics, which BT is spending £10bn to lay nationwide by 2011, will ensure broadband customer service will improve, said Paul Reynolds, head of the firm's wholesale …
Just what the industry needs, more price pressure on ISPs due to poor reporting. ISPs will only be charged £6.39 rental on an ADSL tail *IF* the line is on one of the 1016 exchanges where there is sufficient volume for the £1.24 rebate to be applied. The rest will cost £7.63, providing the ISP opts for CBC pricing.
BT's 21CN vision is far more sinister unfortunately. Having worked on the field for BT Wholesale for a number of years now, it clear that the titles "Engineer" and "Technician" are too good for those who work on the front lines for BT. Our job roles have been devolved to such an extent now, that by the time the 21st Century network goes live we'll just be required to change cards under instruction from someone in Bangalor reading from a script.
