    What it cost the city $200k to send in the major to retrive the passwords? What did they do fly him in from the Caribbean, on a private jet.

    Paris! beacause she's worth $200k.

    Poor guy, prison life must be even worse then those horrible stories. Can't he just pick up a bar of soap instead?

    This guy is majorly boned...

    ...or at least he's gonna be. I foresee them throwing away the key in an effort to deter other feisty sysadmins who get the arse.

    where the $200k went

    the $200k is for the 10 people now doing Childs job to spend 3 weeks going "WTF?" and then making a 10 min phone call to Childs and him telling them how to fix it.

    He might not learn a lot about networks in prison but he needs to be sure that he doesn't learn more than he bargained for about other prisoner's "packets".

    He will also need to be careful in case the output from other prisoners "pipes" is directed to /dev/backside

    And if any of them are network specialists already, they might be able to show him a good "routing"...

    ...already getting my coat.

    Does serve the city right

    The city blew it big time. First mistake. They hired a guy with a criminal record (serious enough crime).

    Second mistake. They obviously didn't check their security policies regarding who could access what.

    @Gis Bun

    Well I hope that your idea doesn't become too popular with employers. In the UK it is now a crime to do practically anything, so that almost everyone has a criminal record.

    A new one being considered is to make it a criminal act to be involved in a road traffic incident (crash); it seems that there weren't enough people being convicted already...
