back to article Nuke plant reborn as 'green' data center

1&1 Internet - one of the world's largest web hosts - will build its next European data center inside an abandoned nuclear fuel facility. Built in the late 1980s, Hanau, Germany's 'New MOX' plant was supposed to process fuel for nuclear reactors, making mixed oxide rods from enriched Uranium and Plutonium. But thanks to local …

    Nuclear Cloudy ? ... or ? ...

"But it couldn't help but add that some servers will be cloudy."

    ... maybe Mushroom Cloudy ?

the one with the glowing caps in my jacket

Y'know, it just occured to me ...

"the center will only use electricity from renewable energy sources."

    Consider the word "entropy".

    That is all ...

So where is this green energy coming from?

    why don't they say?

I bet it's from some glowing rods they found in a cupboard.

    "Hello 1&1 support"

    "Hi, my servers down"

"Oh, sorry, we've had to switch that one off because the winds not blowing very hard today and we promised to use only renewable resources"

Marketing, Marketing, Marketing! Just because you "buy" x,000 KWH of energy generated by wind over the year doesn't mean your totally renewably powered!

    Easy to be green...

"that chill server iron with the help from the outside air"

Is that all it takes to be green? My aircon units chill the server iron with help from the outside air, that's _what aircon does_. Aircon does not destroy the heat, all it does is transfer it to the outside of the building. In effect all a fridge does is move the heat from the inside of the fridge to the outside (using largely the same method). Whatever method you use is going to require some sort of fans or pumps/compressors to move the medium that moves the heat and this is what uses the energy.

Convection could be used but it just isn't efficient enough unless the thermal difference between inside and outside is sufficient to drive the system, but then I guess this is Germany which can get pretty cold.

    Cooling Towers

They won´t be spending much dosh installing cooling towers to chill all that iron heh?

Too bad they can´t use ANY sort of wireless to communicate interior and exterior, since we are talking about 12-feet-thick concrete walls.

I thought they should finish building the reactor, just to power the datacenter, though.

Mine is the bright yellow one with dosimetric film in the upper chest pocket.

    This is the only way...

1 and 1 will ever get glowing reports.

    It's the lead-lined one, cheers.

    Cloudy servers?

    Let's continue the weather forecast...

Presumably, there won't be outbreaks of *Sun*shine in the data centre, and you certainly don't want rain in there...

Mine's the one with the thermometer in the pocket...

Not sure if this is funny in some way or just a mistake

    @entropy

Unlike the universe, the Earth is not a closed system - heat and light from the sun and orbit of the moon are pumping in energy all the time.

    "Consider the word "entropy""

Oh, you mean -- "You're all doomed"?

The entire planet is eventually going down the pan and you worry about 'renewables'? Run the thing by burning dead puppies and kittens.

    Y'know -- bio-waste.

    re: Entropy

The last word on the topic must go to the mighty MC Hawking:

"Creationists always try to use the second law,

to disprove evolution, but their theory has a flaw.

The second law is quite precise about where it applies,

only in a closed system must the entropy count rise.

The earth's not a closed system' it's powered by the sun,

so fuck the damn creationists, Doomsday get my gun!"
