back to article Maradona rubbed from Yahoo! web by Argentinian judge

Following a judge's temporary restraining order, Yahoo! Argentina has blocked all web searches for the country's most famous son: notorious football cheat Diego Maradona. Maradona is known the world over for his, shall we say, sleight of hand in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinal between England and Argentina. And he now manages …

    Re: Remove him

Another, slightly harsher route may also be available.

I'm sure in Argentina that a more permanent removal solution could be procured for a fraction of the cost of defending one of these court cases.

It might also act as a deterrent to the others who might be tempted to start similar litigation.

Of course no multi-billion-dollar, multinational company would ever think along these lines.

Nor would I ever advocate it.

Even if the method did tend to work well for all those big Russian companies...

    Proper Translation

"Con motivo de una orden judicial solicitada por partes privadas, nos hemos visto obligados a suprimir temporalmente todos o algunos de los resultados relacionados con ésta búsqueda" better translates to:

Due to a judicial order obtained by private parties, we have found ourselves obligated to temporarily suppress some or all of the results related to this search.

I wish that all searches that were filtered showed this type of disclaimer, you can't fault companies when they're forced by proper legal documents. That lawyer however needs to be shut up, and disbarred. And the judges who have let this happen should also be facing severe consequences-though they are probably just ignorant and not malicious.

Why can't search engines not just agree to block offending pages?

For every page the judge has to rule a new case.

    Stop

They should just refuse to block it.

If the major search engines stick two fingers up, what will they do?

    Ban Yahoo and Google?

Can't see that going down well with Argentine web users.

    There are alternatives you know.

Try typing: "marching powder fan", with the quotes, into Google.

Looking at the first article returned, presumably "Greggs the Bakers patron saint" has a similar effect.

Alternatively, "cheating argentinian bastard" produces a fine selection of results for He Who Shall Not Be Searched For.

That is not the only things he is known for

First of all the hand of god has made a few recurring appearances including one in Italy at the next world cup. So while England was the first to suffer by the hand of god it was by far not the only one.

So as far as that is concerned - welcome to a world cup. The sole exemption where ticket and merchandise revenues and politics did not decide the score instead of the players was probably 1994 in the USA.

Mexico was a classic example where everything humanly possible was done to keep teams with significant "tourist populace" as long as possible at the expense of teams which did not bring that much revenue. In fact England should not bitch that much about it. USSR had 3 out of 4 goals scored against it from offside or after offensive fouls with all officials closing a blind eye. It still fought until the end and nearly won playing with 11 against 14 which by the way England did not and a lonely Garry a victory does not make.

The next world cup in Italy was not any different. We saw the "hand of god" again as well as concerted official effort to eliminate non-profit bringing teams as early as possible. So was France and so was every cup from there onwards except USA.

And we should not forget the important role of Maradonna in demonstrating that ephedrine and cocaine can indeed grant some very special powers to a football player so that he does not even need to have the hand of god.

    no great loss

well at least I can still type "maradona the cheating dwarf coke fiend" into google and get some results.

I doubt many argentinians would be typing that! Next they will be banning these two words "falkland islands"......

Known in England for slight of hand incident

As far as the rest of us are concerned he is known primarily as a flawed genius, a genius on the field and a lunatic off it.

It should be noted he scored an additional legitimate goal five minutes later when he took the ball from inside his own half to score, while being fouled by some cheating English twunt.

All the slight of hand prevented was the joy of seeing Engerland eliminated painfully on penalties, again, ye lost 2-1 on the day.

    An embarrassment to sport

While the censorship is obviously "a bad thing," I can't help thinking it couldn't have happened to a nicer cheat.

So is this the face of the future...?

... The web being sanitised at the whim of Judges who mostly don't have a clue about it, at the behest of money grubbing lawyers who don't care about it, prompted by idiot "celebrities" who think they have a right to control it and what people can read about them...?

Not only do we have to worry about Control Freak Governments telling us what we can or cannot look at in case it's bad for us (or because it exposes their embarassing failures), now we risk seeing the most powerful tool for Freedom of Information being crippled by those who are only interested in a quick buck.

    Maradona is a God

Hand of God......nah Maradona is God. Don't get me wrong, despite my hatred of football Im still an Englishman and dislike his Hand of God cheating. In fact whenever there's an England VS Argentina match on, or something about Maradona on the screen, I remind my Argentine-Italian wife, (in a jokey manner of course.) ......her normal response is a deadpan answer of "Pfft he's allowed to do that, he's Maradona!!"

This filtering of Maradona won't last long though. Maradona is a God in Argentina. Take Beckham, Linekar, Best, Moore, and whichever the latest boy/girl band is and mix them all together and and you'll still only have a fraction of the adoration and obsession that Maradona has from the average Argie. So it will get overturned pretty quickly as they love him down there.

This sort of comment is always interesting...

"It should be noted he scored an additional legitimate goal five minutes later when he took the ball from inside his own half to score, while being fouled by some cheating English twunt."

Whenever I see that twisty turny goal, invariably someone will comment that he's running 'round the England players like they're standing still. From my perspective they pretty much were standing still. They'd had the stuffing knocked out of them by the first goal as everyone on the park knew it was handball. The question is, would he have scored that second goal had he not have scored the first in the manner he did? It's much easier to beat a thoroughly dispirited side. Ask any club that travels to Old Trafford and sees Ronaldo McDonaldo pull some diving/rolling 'round on the floor theatrics, gets a free-kick or penalty and scores. Ask the away team what that does to your morale; you'd just feel that there's no point. You can't beat a fixed game and that's the end of it.

Potentially my granny could've scored that second Maradona goal against England at that exact point in time. Mind you, my granny was ace at footie...she was good at knitting too but that's another story.

    Note to the Argentinean judge

A: Said incident happened over twenty years ago, get the fuck over it. B: It's references to a football player FFS, don't you have better things to do with your time than worry about the image of a professional sports figure who is barely remembered outside of Argentina?? I mean really, come on this is approaching epic fail.

Amazing there is so much passion for such a dreadfully boring sport. Perhaps only cricket is more boring.

Don't cry for Argentina. They are busy bankrupting themselves again, so this helps divert them from their troubles. Don't be surprised if they start a war as well for the same purpose.

    @ AC

Come on get with the times pal, they aren't busy bankrupting themselves, they already did that in 2001 when the economy crashed. The Peso went from 1:1 with the Dollar to about 4:1 where its currently sitting steady. At the time many places wouldn't accept Peso's but would accept any other stable currency, especially US Dollars and GB Sterling Pounds.

Also at the same time kidnappings became the in thing for a country that has no Job Seekers Allowance, and no National Health Service. If you had money you were at risk of being kidnapped, or your kids being kidnapped. At the Airports they would search people not for guns or drugs, but for money to stop them trying to take it out of the country. My wife was stopped and searched 5 times going through the main airport. (She flew out to Argentina the day after 9/11 and came back a few days before Xmas.)

Its much more stable now. The economy has mostly recovered although the exchange rate is still low, but its much better than it was.

And no they aren't liable to start a war. That was the Military Junta that was loosing their Dictatorship grip on the country and did a Bush/Wag the Dog and started a war to try and stir up popularity. Yes someone people still grumble about the Falklands/Malvinas but they are more interested in getting the former Junta members who made thousands disappear during their dictatorship.
