back to article Gordo entertains a couple of lapdancers

Two lapdancers from the Spearmint Rhino chain yesterday shimmied their way to Downing Street to present a petition protesting against the attempted reclassification of their places of work as “sex encounter establishments”. According to the Sun, backbench Labour MP Roberta Blackman-Woods has proposed the move which would "make …

But tell me this, and be honest...

...how many of you would actually find your admiration of the guy increasing if he really was dallying with floozies in their professional capacity?

Questionmark + Floozy = Entirely appropriate iconography!

"...how many of you would actually find your admiration of the guy increasing if he really was dallying with floozies in their professional capacity?"

Nope. Cos you can guarantee that if he did, he'd be using our bloody taxes to pay for it as expenses!!

If they don't like that name

How about "Dirty old man establishments." or "Dirty raincoat joints." Would they be happier with those?

Lets be fair they do need a specific classification and licence type to differentiate them. As such something like "sexual entertainment venue" would probably fit the bill.

Paris? She ought to be compulsory for this story.

    Thumb Up

    @ first commentard

As long as they kept him busy enough to stop messing the country up with more toothless quangos and laws chipping away at our Magna Carta freedoms, my respect would go up. very slightly.

Maybe that's a thought for all the lapdancers who are now under-employed as the bankers don't have quite so much bonus money to visit them....

Did they do the 'for the children' thing?

Let me guess, the campaigner against lap dancing clubs was a woman and either fat, ugly or both? And no doubt she invoked some 'for the children' angle. In essence she would slur men as rapists that pose a threat to children.

Yes? I see a theme with these.

You know what, I don't think men turn into ravenous besties just because they've had a lapdance, I don't think they pose a threat to anyone, I think they're a little harmless entertainment, and I think the women that campaign against thrills like this say more about their own deficiencies than about any real problem.

    Support your local strippers

I know I'll be heading to the local strip club tonight to voice my support. Its the least I can do. Actually, sod tonight, I'm going down there for lunch.

    role reversal?

Isn't it normally the dancers who do the entertaining?

Now I'm stuck with an image I'd rather not have. Let's see if he's put his clothes back on for Prime-Minister's Questions at lunchtime.

    Fair play to the girls

This is actually a very serious matter - albeit not IT related (but I saw it was in Bootnotes). Re-classifying dancing establishments as 'encounter' venues will allow local authorities to charge silly money for licences, and/or simply ban establishments on a whim. Another easy vote-winning target, but ultimately not so good in the long run.

More importantly, this is another sign of a creeping 'new morality' coming in. The arguments against the clubs tend to the moralistic and anecdotal, as opposed to factual. 'Extreme' pornography has already been outlawed for no good reason, and this is just another step.

Bottom (ahem) line - if you enjoy consensual adult nudity, you should be prepared to either fight for it or lose it.

Paris, because give it another 10 years this is all you'll be allowed to see of her on the 'net.

    Fair enough

Why not introduce a "Smutty encounter establishment" label, to be joined by any cinema showing re-runs of Carry On films... see if they can lithely wriggle out of that one :)

Mine's the not quite flasher grade mac.

    Big Brother is watching...

Obviously this is an attempt by The Party to encourage goodsex whilst oulawing sexcrime because the idea of pleasure and enjoyment is a threat to society and a corruption of morals.

It is already clear that The Party doesn't like the idea of people engaging in non-approved activities, or even looking at "dangerous pictures", this is just another step on their path of Moral Purity, banning anything that doesn't fit in with their views.

I, for one, do not welcome our Puritan Overlords.

    @Greg

errrrm no, they're not sex workers. If they were sex workers then you could probably call everyone in Hollywood a sex worker because they've 'exposed themselves to (millions of) people' at some point.

I'm not sure Kate 'paint me, jack' Winslet would like that, or Helen Mirren....

    phwerrrr i feel sick now.

"We made that bit about nursing up"

Not if you've met the majority I have worked with. It used to be that all nurses (who didn't mary the doctor) could look forward to as they went through the motions (ahem) was becoming either Beverly Allitt or Claire Rayner.

Abi Titmuss gave them a whole new set of aspirations.

The one with ceramic plates please. The armour they issue us road crews with isn't scalpel proof.

    Joke

    The real question is

Did Mr. Brown grep said lap dancers while meeting with them? If so then that would shed some light as to why they want this change enacted.

  18. Oldfogey

    Folk dancing?

Why are people getting worried about exhibitions of Northern Scandinavian Folk Dancing?

I really know I live in the sticks - a local venue was not doing too well, and thought it could improve its business and pull in more punters by starting lap dancing evenings. It went broke in 3 months.

That's exactly what I thought. Luckily, Google knows, and the answer is "yes":
