Russian police in the troubled region of Ingushetia shot dead a prominent web journalist on Sunday night, shortly after he was taken into custody. Magomed Yevloyev was arrested after getting off a flight in Nazran, Ingushetia. Kaloi Akhilgov, a lawyer close to the Ingushetiya.ru website run by Yevloyev, said Yevloyev was taken …

211 Journalists killed, 109 under Putin, some shot, some committed 'suicide' by throwing themselves off tall buildings, quite a few like this one, arrested then turn up dead. If he hadn't have been seen to be arrested by the police, they would deny knowledge of him I bet.

Putin also has the 'Nashi', essentially the Russian version of the Hitler Youth brigade, that march in support of Putin whenever there is an opposition to him.

We really shouldn't go appeasing Putin here over Georgia, and certainly can't trust him to deliver our energy supplies.

    pathetic attempt

by the police to cover it up, it would have been far more convincing if he'd been shot in the leg or chest or, pretty much anywhere apart from the head. I cannot imagine any situation in which attempting to sieze a gun would involve it pointing at your own head.*

presumably they remembered to take his handcuffs off, before releasing the story.

*except possibly attempting to sieze it whilst it was already pointing at your head as you are about to be executed!

@Godwins law, Nashi = Hitler Youth

Nope Godswins law doesn't apply since the founder of Nashi *himself*, said it was a counter to the rise of Nazism in Russian... that reverso logic of the Kremlin again.... like sending the tanks and troops into central Georgia and calling it 'demilitarization'.... like invading Georgia then accusing the *EU* of 'interfering in Georgia'.... always says the opposite of reality.

Since he invoked Godwin, I'm entitled to point out what Nashi really is. They are Putin's version of the Hitler youth in all but name. The kids get recruiting on the grounds of 'nationalism' then fed pro Putin propaganda, flat out lies etc.. This leaflet (written before the 'election' and stating the result in past tense is typical):

    http://lrtranslations.blogspot.com/2007/02/nashi-election-broadsheets.html

"On December 2nd we elected President Putin to be the National Leader of Russia. The President and his party won a devastating victory. They won in exactly the same way that over the past 5 years they have destroyed the terrorists in Chechnya, paid back all of Russia's debts, regained our country's respect, taken back the huge petroleum reserves of Sakhalin-2, and captured the 2014 Olympics for Sochi."

"The USA had a different plan. It wanted the traitors and thieves to win - the American citizen Kasparov, the fascist Limonov, and Nemtsov, who sold off the country. They don’t agree that Putin won. The traitors still want to seize power and take Russia back to the oligarchic and chaotic 1990’s, and once again give the bandits and embezzlers the ability to rob our country and sell off our oil and gas for a pittance. From December3 until the official announcement of the election results, they will try to seize the city squares and buildings, incite disorder, and steal our victory. "

With this latest farce and what's going on in Georgia, I'm willing to do my small part in showing support for those oppressed by Putin & Co by shopping for a few bottles of Georgian wine tonight.

    The worrying thing about this...

is the amount of people who belive the Russian propoganda around the world, and think that NATO, the EU and the US are 100% wrong all of the time. They are not the best people in the world, but at least most of the time they try and do the right thing for other people (even if it is there own people, or companys in the countrys they govern) where as Russia seems to be heading towards a state where everything is about how the leaders look, and how they can make money.

Even when it is about how the leaders of NATO, the EU and the US look, they are at least trying to look like good people, where as Russia seem to be trying to look strong and want people to fear them.

It is very worrying. AC because some people will strongly dissagree with me and there are a few to many people around here who will take it very personaly.

    Russians Believe in Putin...

Just like most of the Chinese people stand behind their leaders on their government's supression of the Pro-Tibetian uprising, the majority of the Russion people stand behind Putin to squash these rebels who are bent on "destroying" Russia. If the majority believes this, then it does no good what the people outside of these countries believe. It is time for the UK, U.S. and the European Union to stop being dependent on these countries for cheap goods & services (China) and energy (Russia).

Engaging in energy war - if this is what it's about - is an insane and profligate non-solution. We need to become self-sufficient in energy, and we need a new electric transport infrastructure. Save the oil for genuinely unavoidable wars.

    In capitalist Russia

they shoot first, and well never ask questions.

Disidency should be welcomed, sure it means you cannot be king of the castle for life, but hey that is probably a good thing. Really it is the power mongers who we should be against, those who aspire to leadership.

In Plato's Republic, he advocated reluctant leaders, those who did not wish to lead, and equipped with the wisdom and knowledge to lead should be the leaders. And you know what he is right, power just corrupts people, and those who aspire to power get corrupted a darn sight faster than those who don't.

Our style of democracy is not great either, labour rigged the last election, oh let's change the boundaries and really we should have at least proportional representation by now.

China and Russia have the problem of land mass, they are both too large, so the only things that work there are rule by iron fists or they will devolve, and people who live there generally know this. Well I say let them devolve and the world will be a better place with more countries. I don't think a one world is possible not without substantial lose of human life, and a lower living standard.

    Reluctant despots

Disidency (sic) is not an end in itself. As for "reluctant leaders", perhaps you mean like Emperor Tiberius, who wrote at some length how he was forced to wield power he didn't believe in. His reign was no fairer or less corrupt than anyone elses. A lot was written deploring the state of moral decay, but nothing was changed. And Tiberius chose as his successors Nero and Caligula, famously bad choices, so the choice of the "reluctant leader" is no better than anyone elses'.

Sounds like you're getting depressed. Perhaps you need a holiday.

    > They've also taken to upping their intimidation of political protests.

Yeah, Matt... seeing as Britain has become the world's exemplar for political repression, and for the complete eradication of free speech, why not sod off to somewhere like Russia or China, where of course you will have complete freedom to say anything you want to, to inflict criminal damage on public property, and to seriously assault the poor sods who have to constrain your worst excesses in order to enable other less interested but more conservative citizens to go about their daily lives unhindered?

In the long term, Russian efforts to regain political control over the Caucasus may backfire. Wait until the Ossetians start setting off bombs in Moscow because Russian suppresses Ossetian nationalism. Just like Chechnya. Every time Georgia comes up

I'm amazed how many of the Reg readers just blithely believe the spin that US/UK have put on this incident.

Georgia and Russia have been 'peace keeping' in South Ossetia for a while, during which the Ossetians had a nice little unoffical poll and decided that they didnt want to be part of a Georgia. Georgia didn't like this, and decided to retake South Ossetia by force. The Ossetians turned to the peacekeepers they had left and asked for help. Russia then let the bear off the leash and gave Georgia a bit of a beating and, as seems to be the vogue for disputed regions these days, recognised their claim to independence. Nothing NATO hasn't done recently..

When this first happened, new reports were impartial, information was sketchy but accurate: Georgia attacked S. Ossetia, Russia retaliated. Fast forward one day, the spin machines are in motion, and suddenly it is Russian territorial agression.. Milliband is the worst, most of the stuff he comes up with is straight out of Yes Minister.

I'm sure the Russians will use it like that (Georgia: big hint, you aren't getting either back now), but FFS, who decided shelling Russian citizens in a region adjacent to Russia filled with Russian troops would be a good idea? They must have top politicians in Georgia to come up with plans like that.

@RW - I reckon for a good while Russia will be happy with 'autonomous regions'. You see how close the BTC pipeline runs to South Ossetia? Thats shelling range, that is.

I bet Azerbaijan wished that it had made up with Armenia (hah! fat chance) rather than running it through Georgia.

It's funny how the Brishit and the Yanks also kill people daily but they're so good at press management that it doesn't even get out. It's always a "heart attack" or yet another unexpected "suicide". It's funny/sad how everyone suddenly jumps on Russia when they do it; how churlish.

Also I can't remember the last time Russia invaded a country and bought about the death of almost a million people, and displaced millions more, leaving them without food, water, electricity, basic medical supplies. Cough...I think a little perspective is needed here.

And, if someone shot pretty much all the journalists in this country, I for one would fucking have a party and send whoever was responsible a six-pack and a slice of cake. Imagine the good it would do! Mind you, the Brishit and American press never ask any awkward questions or really criticise incisively or in the wrong place or in any meaningful way that would bring about change, so they're very unlikely to piss anyone off enough to get shot. Pathetic really.

    Sadly

Sadly, the leader of the Republican party (he has never been the President of the United States, he never made that transition) has destroyed his, and thus our credibility in the world. He mocked and disregarded, if not out right slandered the very institutions that are needed. History Lesson

I'm no fan of Russia, but a lot of western media seems to be leaving a few convenient facts out of the news.

    1) S. Ossetia, etc. all declared or tried to declare independence shortly after the breakup of the USSR (this would imply that the problem existed before the breakup, it's unlikely Russia had expansionist plans so shortly after the breakup).

    2) Russian /peacekeepers/ have been present in S. Ossetia for a long time, this isn't a recent thing.

    3) Many S. Ossetians own Russian passports. (No I don't care how they got them, most governments have it in their constitution that they will protect their own citizens even when they're outside the country).

I doubt the oil pipeline is the target, my personal opinion is that S. Ossetia is an important smuggling route, and if Georgia / NATO controlled the tunnel between the two countries, then very little would be smuggled. I'll even go so far as to say that I suspect all the Russian enclaves / de facto republics outside Russia are important smuggling routes with the exception of the Crimea which contains a large military base.

The western media has done a pretty shite job on reporting about Georgia.

Regards the register story, I don't doubt it, I do doubt that anyone will come forward as a witness even if the police shot him in the head in front of a crowd.

It's 1956 and 1968 all over again, lots of verbal "support" and propaganda with little in the way of doing or being able to do anything about it. "More than 15 persons were killed as Georgian armed forces launched fresh offensive late Thursday against separatists from the breakaway region of South Ossetia near the regional capital Tskhinvali, media reports said.

The conflict came close on the heels of a ceasefire offer to South Ossetia from Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili following days of clashes. He urged South Ossetian separatist leaders to join direct talks on resolving the conflict. South Ossetia had also agreed to hold fire until talks.

But a Georgian government statement said separatists launched mortar and artillery attacks on two villages Thursday evening and Georgian forces were forced to respond proportionately to restore order."

What are the Georgians supposed to do? Go to the Russian peacekeepers and say
