The agency's astro-boffins needed some good news: last month, their Schiaparelli Mars lander – which was dropped from the ExoMars craft – smashed onto the Martian surface after …

Glad to see things working well after the 'landing' mistake.

You say failed landing of Schiaparelli, I say successful demonstration of lithobraking!

But did it do the "dead cat bounce" or just go "boom"? Enquiring minds and all that......

The pictures make it look like it went BOOM.

Mind you, it also looks like at least part of the lander rolled away from the impact site, much like the comedy hub cap rolling away from a car crash.

Dr John Brandenburg on Mars Nuclear Weapons

There is evidence of massive nuclear, air burst bombs that wiped out Martian atmosphere,

causing loss of liquid surface water and leaving Xenon-129 isotope evidence.

Not sure L Ron Hubbard's opus count as evidence. And in any case you'd have the wrong planet.

Very nice Stealers Wheel reference in the title of the photo at the top. As a service to those who were not young adults in 1972 here is the obligatory youtube link.

Nice photo and even more satisfying to see that Microsoft has started its XBox advertising for the festive season on such a grand scale. (Lower left of the picture).
