    how serious is it?

In other countries it can be an offence to: have your computer access "child pornography", post online a suggestion that the leader of your country be assassinated, donate money online to a "terrorist organization", bet money online on a sports event, offer for download copyrighted material, post pictures of law enforcement officers at protest rallies (isn't that what happened to rackspace?), etc etc. With a lot of variation between different countries. And in the USA the FBI can send a SWAT team to kick in your door for some pretty minor variations of any of the above. So in China, a country of a billion plus people, threatening the stability of the country is a crime. Posting embarrassing information can get you in deep trouble. In the USA donating money to a muslim charity can get you "rendered" to Syria for a nice long torture session. In the USA voicing support for the Iraqi/Afghani resistance can get you sent to Guantanomo. In the USA downloading music can get you hauled into court, after companies similar to Yahoo hand over your personal details. I for one don't see how the one is soooo much worse than the other, and get a little sicker every time I hear some hypocrite babbling on about "freedom" in some other country without starting/finishing the fight in their own backyard. I mean really - apparently it's fine to go to court for !sharing music!, but trying to destabalize the world's biggest country should be totally copacetic? Bollocks!

When it comes to the indefensible, call people names, yeah!

"England jackarses were crying about fair trade with china, by dumping opium that would make a Columbian drug lord reach erection."

Looks like you have all the words, now if you can put them in some sort of undertandable order, that'd be great!

Anyway, it doesn't matter what countries are doing what. What Yahoo have done is wrong, however you measure it, and any defence of their actions is a sign of ignorance and/or self-righteous callousness.
