back to article Mars by the 2030s: Obama

President Obama has pledged to get citizens of the Stars and Stripes onto Mars within about two decades using a mix of commercial and NASA technology. He noted that during his tenure in office, commercial space companies have taken a third of the satellite launch market. Over 1,000 companies in nearly 50 states now work in the …

What the hell is Obama going on about now?

Maybe he should reflect about his less-than-convincing here-on-Earth tenure. 8 years of war & consequences, surveillance has become legal, undeclared drone wars, several countries blown sky-high and getting worse, in bed for war crimes with Saudi Arabia, faffing around in Russia's near abroad and racial tension like never in the land of the free, promises to pump up the nuclear arsenal, and a pivot to China.

And now Mars??? WHAT THE F*CK!!

Oh yeah, he got Osama. Yeah.

      *shrug*

So he's somewhat uninspiring. At least he's not Trump. Or Cruz. Or any of the other sack of social and/or cultural conservatives why so desperately want power so they can oppress groups they don't like.

When the choices are "kinda meh" and "completely fucking whackadoodle", "kinda meh" starts to look okay.

I'm sure they'll sell NASA a few seats.

Am really excited to see the support for manned spaceflight again.

Of course, incoming Presidents do retask NASA and we are due for one of those. Also the other party controls the money, and they prefer "whatever the Democrat doesn't like, built in my district". You know how we bicker over here.

It's nice to see him trying to benefit from SpaceX's fame and popularity. Remember, this is the same guy that canceled Ares & Constellation. Fucking asshole.

Mars has ALWAYS been "15 years away" according to NASA ever since the 1960s, and I don't see that changing. SpaceX is the one making it viable, not NASA.

SpaceX has already told NASA "yeah, we'll toss you some data" from the Mars missions. See http://spacenews.com/nasa-exploring-additional-cooperation-with-spacexs-red-dragon-mission/ and similar stories.

Just like "tickets to orbit by the '80s" (Except the Russians made that one come true, not NASA)
