...the race will be on to create the first one that can have the creases in it ironed out. Until that's possible, they are going to be a niche technology.

  Think of the action of a steel tape measure. Now imagine the tape measure being only about 8" long, but 8-10" wide. A roll-out screen. Now pack the gubbins of a smartphone into a "block", 8-10" long and maybe 1-2" cross-section. Or smaller.

  I always liked the way the Globals had two pull-stops on the screen. Pull it out half way for normal use, or all the way for side-by-side apps or a wider single app.

  Since I don't want to pay $9 to rent the article for 48 hours, I'm going to guess that they applied the film to someone's hand and that the red color you're seeing is the actual sheet itself. From the abstract, the sheet resistance is 0.42 ohms/square, which would roughly equate to a corner-to-corner resistance of 1 ohm. In the lower right-hand picture, you can see a little light off to the side with the electrodes applied (and presumably carrying the current to drive it), which appears to show that the patch is indeed conductive.
