It's time to leave the doldrums of the IT operations room and head to new horizons.

"We know from its size, dimension and these records that the Sandwich was [Cook's] Endeavour."

Now world-famous as the Submarine Sandwich.

    "Lord Sandwich"?

That reminds me, anyone know how that Boaty McBoatface naming thing is getting on?

Sir David Attenborough has caved in and changed his middle name to McBoatface. A win-win for all concerned

AFAIK it's still 'RRS Decision by naming committee pending'

Actually, I think I prefer that even to Boaty McBoatface.

    Sailed the replica once...

I sailed a week aboard the HM Bark (Not HMS) Endeavour as voyage crew in 1998. That was the coolest experience of my whole life. You can take that to mean I've lived a boring life if you like. I submit that helming a tall ship under sail, silvered in the light of the full moon sparkling on the water is a rare opportunity not to be forgotten. If you ever have such a chance, take it!

    No IT connection at all.

So... I hear this ship was made to ship coal?

      1. Tikimon

Re: Sailed the replica once... was a collier, yes

Yep, she was built to haul coal. Cook chose the vessel due to its large cargo space and stable sailing characteristics. Sailing long distances into uncharted waters meant he wanted to be well-supplied.

In the replica, that gave them lots of space to build in the 20th-Century deck, house diesel engines and bunkerage for their fuel, and a cold room. Unlike our 18th-century counterparts, we had delicious hot meals, showers, and marine heads (no crapping off the bow, lol). Spacious, yes!

Re: Sailed the replica once... was a collier, yes

Actually the large cargo space was why the ship-formerly-known-as-Endeavour was in America. It was being used as a floating prison for captured revolutionaries.

    Last I heard (2016-04-20)

Science Minister Jo Johnson demonstrates his respect democracy by looking for alternatives to Boaty McBoatface. He seems to prefer "Imaginative" or "more suitable than others". In second place came Poppy-Mai, but apparently the name will be "announced in due course".

"more suitable than others" is a terrible name for a ship

Isn't it horribly bad luck to rename a ship?

Except for the case of the USS New York. It was a very good ship

What really happened to the HMS Endeavour

    I am the HMS Endeavour.

A mighty and grand ship of World exploration, proud traveler of the Seven Seas.

What's that? I've been renamed HMS Lord Sandwich!?

    Oh Lord, sink me now!
