back to article UK.gov says it's letting 1,000 SMEs push digital wares at civil servants

The government has awarded 1,261 suppliers a place on its 'Digital Outcomes and Specialists' framework – intended to help mandarins better use SMEs in their efforts to become more digital. According to the Cabinet Office, 92 per cent of the suppliers on the framework are SMEs, with 52 per cent new to the Digital Marketplace – …

"But why would we want to use SMEs? They can't give us anything like the bribes that Capita does." - said every senior civil servant.

Ah, now see - you're confused. This is the public sector, not the private sector.

    Agile and flexible ?

When applied to the military, it meant not buying equipment for anything (it neatly answered the charge of preparing for the last war). Squaddy solution No.1 - nick it off the Yanks.

Where I worked (a nameless multinational) it meant not preparing for anything - any problem, however predictable, was greeted by the same panic. The firm has since been taken over ...

Management jargon of the worst kind, but great for the consultants who get hired with the money that should have been spent on decent kit.

It also means small businesses will miss out on millions of pounds, as departments typically spend a lot of money on projects at the end of the financial year."

I think he answered his own question.

The Billion Dollar Question which is Always Out There to be Answered

The question one has to ask oneself if one has something worth sharing and selling is ...... Does one want to work for/with the present UK government, for there are governments aplenty elsewhere to choose from, with all able to offer the moon and stars for prime projects and prize programs? Of that you can be assured.

This is just a preview — your post hasn’t been submitted yet.

Whenever the Something is simply being more human, rather than looking for being more digital -- yes, one possibly has SomeTHInG to share.... and this being less digital is becoming unexpectedly urgent for a Govt-backed service or a Service-backed govt...

They come forth, they go a'passing, fade away, and come and go, and the only worth a handshake is the one I think I know.

Sorry, but totally willing to take the downvotes (and knowing the commentards that in itself will attract downvotes, because quite frankly it is own commentards that can be arsed to sign up just to downvote), what is his angle - seriously wondering what el regs' angle is this days other than to push "articles" and "news" without any real newsworthy analysis (and for all those that just drop by once in a while that aren't signed up that feel the same, perhaps take the time to sign in and up vote.... ah who am I kidding....)

Having spent time working with both CCS and CTS/GDS I fully get that their whole reason for existence is to drive down costs in the public sector and in turn provide value to citizens, how about a little support and realistic journalism - after all they are trying to turn around years of contracts with the large suppliers and the bad behaviours and govt specific price tags that previous contracts have attracted, and likewise get that change at this scale doesn't happen overnight.

Speaking Truth unto Powers that Wannabe Outs Useless Fools as their Useful Tools ‽ .

Methinks a little support and realistic journalism is exactly the opposition which outs dodgy government shenanigans and frees oppressed citizens from austere taxing regimes ….. sysadmin which rely on enforced public payment to failed private enterprise schemes/scams.

And such are failed schemes and/or scams, because if they were successful they would be generating economies and not costing fortunes with mounting deficits building never able to be repaid debt.

Although, of course, it is possible to wipe out/forgive all debt and start everything again from a level playing field, … one just has to declare it …… but such an easy political move would prove that fiat capitalism and the formation and accrual of debt and deficits are a blunt ignorant and arrogant means of mass command and control in the hands, hearts and minds of exchequers and the banking sector and an elitist few?

Yes, it is just so, and a ticking revolutionary time bomb and suicide vest to behold and be wearing if one insists on not resetting the clocks to zero for a novel fresh start requiring greater intelligence and grander imagination to lead.

You talk a good talk but the great walk and long march are all missing, AC, with things getting steadily worse rather than better. And tomorrow, which is one of those Budget days, will that all be confirmed with pie in the sky promised again then for sweet cake always to be delivered further on down the line by the gravy train which crashed and was burned ages ago.

And are we to believe that silent down voters here deny and disagree that all of the above is true and not false testimony, and in so doing extraordinarily render themselves unto systems and mass audiences as useless fools and useful tools?

The free sharing and spontaneous presentation of greater information and secret bearing and secret baring intelligence is the new virtualised playground in which warriors do battle against ghosts in, to fail and fall at every hurdle and obstacle on their journey to future bounty promised aplenty.

IT is the world y'all are now living in, and a'floundering in, in support of the practically unattainable and inequitable.

        Have a nice 0day.

has anyone told the departments in question?

getting fed up hearing of things like this when also having to deal with our ridiculous internal procurement rules (UK public sector org) that say any company must have minimum £50m turnover to pre-qualify for any tender around providing IT Services ...

Re: has anyone told the departments in question?

I remember trying to convince my old employer (large GOV department) to use free open source tools which was met with scepticism and fear. When the gov party line for some time has been to assess these options first before going off and paying millions for the same thing.
