back to article Final Euro Parliament vote on passenger name records delayed

A final vote by the European Parliament on a proposed directive allowing the transfer of passenger name records (PNR) from airlines to EU countries has been delayed by "left wing groups", Reuters has reported. Socialist, Liberal and Green MEPs have blocked talks on the proposed PNR Directive scheduled for next week, with there …

    But of course

"PNR data collected may only be processed for the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of terrorist offences and serious crime"

This statement is perfectly valid and acceptable. The only issue is : what is the definition of "terrorist offences and serious crime" ?

What happens when disagreeing with government policy on any matter becomes a serious crime ?

      Re: But of course

Or what happens when your name is similar or the same as a known terrorist (or just mistakenly added) and you get stopped from taking your family on holiday and only find out at the airport? However you are not told why, given no right to appeal and may never be allowed to fly again.

      What do you mean, when?

      Re: But of course

The problem here, being that the terms, 'prevention', 'detection' and 'investigation' could be taken to mean almost anything, so could be used to justify bulk collection of personal details by dodgy governments (like our own). I would have no issue with collection of individual records with a court order from a judge or equivalent, but the risk is that the implementation would require only a rubber-stamp from a politician with no proper judicial oversight whatsoever.

" what is the definition of "terrorist offences and serious crime" ?"

Pretty much anything that would embarrass the Government. Whistle-blowing on human rights violations, revealing the misdeeds of the political elite, or even just making them look foolish tend to be counted as 'serious crimes'.

a.k.a. everyone who is not right-wing and trying to force it through by greasing it with weasel words.

Presumably downvoted by the frightful Mrs May?

What worries me is how few people care about this. Still, I suppose as long as Poundstretcher is open and East Enders is on the telly, what is there to worry about?

And anything else they can think of that might be useful for identity theft?

When all that lot gets hacked the fraudsters will have a field day.

    Dear Mr Kirkhope,

It's called "democracy". Perhaps you've heard of it?

    1. Loyal Commenter Silver badge

They've heard of it, and it frightens them, which is why they are trying to subvert and dismantle it.

        The Establishment

...and how they get away with it. A book by Owen Jones, well worth a read to see how far we have sleepwalked down the road to totalitarianism.

By taking a leap backwards? No, thank you.

Of that 3, the only one that does not cause me to shudder is Canada. I just feel sorry for them because of their very dodgy southern neighbour.

For the last 70 years or so, the USA has undermined democracies all over the world and now is so in the power of big money that their Regressives (aka Republicans) can push a sub-literate ****hole for their top government job and thousands think he is the man for it.

Australia has opted to leave the commune of civilised nations by sticking all refugees and migrants in a prison camp in another country rather than learn that refugees and migrants are very different.

No, I do not want to be associated with either of those 2 countries that bring shame upon the very concept of democracy. Canada has been doing what it was told. Can they afford to stop now?

Yes, planes would be very difficult to fly if the right wing was all they had.

    Meh

Perhaps we're overdue a prolonged period of regressive, repressive government. Only then will we learn and only then will we overthrow the shackles and enter a new age.

Like going on holiday during the school term time, or trying to get your children into the 'right' school. Dog fouling is also a terrorist act I hear.

Coment from one of these "left wing groups"?

As in, where is it El Reg? You just quote one side on this one? Poor stuff, only saved by several well taken points BTL.

      Re: Travel

I live in the UK, and have ex-pat relatives living in Greece. Please explain how I should travel to see them without using air travel, bearing in mind that the longest length of leave I can book from work is two weeks. It's bad enough as it is having to travel to Gatwick in order to fly to anywhere on the mainland other than Athens or Thessaloniki (and my rels live in the southern end of the Pelopponese peninsular, which if I fly to Athens is an hour's bus travel into central Athens, and a four hour bus journey from Athens to Kalamata just to get near to them).
