back to article Oz defence to get $25 bn to spend on digital defences

Australia has reiterated its commitment to the Toothless Tiger Moth, with prime minister Malcolm Turnbull announcing an expansion of defence capital and personnel. Ahead of the long-awaited defence white paper, due for release this week, the federal government has said it will meet former prime minister Tony Abbott's promise …

However, he still reckons the JSF's problems will be ironed out, and that as production ramps up, the fighter's US$106m price tag should drop to about $85m by 2018. ®

I'm not up on the latest government lingo. But is the above statement government speak for

"We made a huge f$cking mistake that will cost the taxpayers Billions, but there is no way that we will admit to that now"

Yet you have planes like the Harrier still going strong and the A-10 too.

Is it me or have these techie/scientist types dropped in what they can actually deliver, from the ones in the 50's and 60's that gave us space flight etc?

Especially considering the lack of technology they had back then compared to what we have now.

The F-35 / JSF is unwanted and unsuitable

"The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) has been a controversial purchase from the get-go..."

What a delightfully understated comment. It's late, massively over-budget and doesn't address our country's or region's needs in its mission profile. At least the Canadians have seen the light and scrubbed their involvement.

Slightly OT, but while I'm here, can we drop the US-ian word 'get-go' please? There's a perfectly suitable English word 'start' that even saves one letter in the process. If you want to go for impressive multi-syllable words, you could always try 'beginning'. Let's keep El Reg true to its UK (and Antipodean) roots!

"problems that cause maintainers to do a lot of things they don't want to do"

Would this be the equivalent of having to make a normal computer user a member of the local admin group on their PC so that those applications that (stupidly) require this for periodic updating can run, or something worse?

If so, what is the real-world effect on a very complex vehicle designed to travel at high speed, perform aerodynamically challenging manoeuvres and mete out destruction to others?

The ignorance of those commenting on the F35 so far is astounding, but understandable. You really have no idea what you are talking about, nor what the capability of this plane will be. And please don't throw in that furphy about the dogfight that "went so wrong", because the F35, once complete, will NEVER be in that scenario.

And Mr Chirgwin, if you are really so anti-defence/military, perhaps you should get someone else to report on it.
