back to article Don't mention the F word: Adobe releases Animate CC

Adobe has released Animate CC, formerly known as Flash Professional, as part of its effort to move away from its proprietary plug-in and runtime in favour of HTML5 Canvas and WebGL. The company announced its intentions at the end of November 2015, explaining that “we completely rewrote the tool over the past few years to …

    and is it chock full of vunerabilities?

    What's to like with this? Not a Lot IMHO.

    Come on Adobe put it out of its misery. The world don't need flash any more. It's time has passed, like a certain dead parrot.

    Bah!

    "When it announced the name change, Adobe stated that "over a third of all content created in Flash Professional uses HTML5," implying that up to two-thirds still uses Flash. This is still fully supported."

    That would be "implying just under two thirds" to them wot can actually do arithmetic.

        Mathematically yes. But they can carry a suggested value judgement; for instance, generally speaking, people will use "up to two-thirds" when the ideal would be greater and "under two thirds" when the ideal would be lower.

      To be fair, there are a lot of classic old Flash games written by very gifted lunatics. Check out Blocks With Letters On or Hapland.

      Yes, Flash is over, but it wasn't all bad. :-)

    Flash Pro != Flash Plugin

    It's worth noting that Flash Professional/Animate is a content authoring tool and not the Flash Player browser plugin.

    Granted, the browser plugin is likely exactly what comments here describe, however my recollection of the authoring tool was as a great graphics package with a powerful language that allowed for rapid prototyping and cross platform support. (in-application code editing was a pig, but there were some great editors available)

    I've not used Flash Pro in many years, but if Adobe could take the authoring tool (with support for ActionScript3) and shift the primary export to HTML5, no-plugins required, I'd certainly consider using it again over plain old javascript. It'd then be as safe as anything else on the internet...

    "Flash" is undeniably a dirty word, as can be seen from some of the comments, it's not surprising they've decided to phase it out.
