back to article Big Ben belittled by Infosys' plans for enormous erection

Infosys, which reckons its Mysuru education centre is the world's largest corporate university, says it's going to build a 135-metre clock tower there. The massive erection would shade London's 96 metre Big Ben, California's 87m Hoover Tower and Cornell's 53m McGraw Tower, says India's Economic Times. Why does Infosys need …

Big Ben is not the clock tower. Big Ben is nickname for the "Great Bell".

      Quite right.

The massive erection would shade Big Ben's 96 metre Elizabeth Tower.

      There! You're welcome Reg.

What the campus really needs is some way for people to be able to tell what time of day it is?

Sheer vanity project. Might as well just have a inanimate stela/pylon/obelisk and save on the cost of the clock needing maintenance.

Filling it with stars doesn't come cheap though

"needs is some way for people to be able to tell what time "

When you are educating people to earn such low wages they cannot even afford one of the knock-off cheap watches they are being trained to assemble.........

The Chamberlain Tower at Birmingham University at 99, 100 or 110m depending on who you talk to apparently already puts Elizabeth Tower in the shade.

And presumably how cold it is?

    compensation perhaps?

For the small ... you get the rest.

      Re: compensation perhaps?

You guessed half right. It is compensation, just not for what you think, it is for the quality of the production coming out of the institution.

Thought the Saudis had the tallest clock tower

It's in Mecca, over 600m tall

    Now THAT'S a vanity project.

"It's going to be taking a big breath: the base will need to be 22 metres square for stability."

That's only loosely connected to the size of the tower, depends on the design of the foundations (and what kind of ground conditions your're dealing with). Just look at wind turbines, for example.

But maybe improving the genius loci ("academic breathing", my podex) isnt't the only goal here? Maybe Narayana Murthy wants it to be his tomb as well?

They need a clock to measure the time passed since the deadline they've missed

  10. Alan J. Wylie

    Even taller than Austin University's

Which is only 94m high. Still gave Charles Whitman a good view from the top, though.

Hopefully a little more stable, though.

Will they purchase the redundancy option?

I imagine that if they put the right markings on the ground, it could also be used as a giant sundial?

(Just in case the clockwork mechanism doesn't)

    Joke

    World's biggest cock tower ..

Is there a contest at the register for who can think up the most off-color humor or how to get the human genitalia into the title. It's tedious and totally unnessary. If I was still twelve years old I might find this funny ...

    Ha

It is amazing the lengths a 'corporate university' will go to for credibility. Next up McDonalds university putting their diplomas in Latin.

Mind you, US colleges are just as bad at the cargo cult aping of Oxbridge - gowns and Latin and quads ahoy
