back to article LOHAN takes the stage at Oz Linux shindig

Our Oz readers attending the forthcoming linux.conf.au 2016 shindig in Geelong might like to catch Andrew Tridgell's presentation on "Helicopters and Rocket-Planes", which will include a look at our Low Orbit Helium Assisted Navigator (LOHAN) Vulture 2 spaceplane. As regular readers know, Linux guru Tridge has been working on …

    LOHAN

Seems like I've been reading minor updates for years now. Anything ever going to happen?

      Ask the FAA.

Perhaps it's time to give up on the USA and move LOHAN to somewhere with less bureaucracy and a more relaxed attitude to freelance rocket ships?

          Re: Re: LOHAN

The main problem with that is the availability of the rocket motor reload. Can't get one in Europe or Oz, so they're off the map.

Ship launched? Off the coast of Cuba maybe?

North Korea seems to be pretty liberal when it comes to rocket launch regs.

I understand the weather in Ulaanbaatar is lovely in May.

Remind us what kind of engine you are using? Top Gear managed to launch a Reliant Robin, so obviously some sorts of rocket engines are permitted in the UK.

We need Cesaroni P54-3G J140-P White Longburn reloads. Not available in Europe due to EU regs cock-up. No problem in the US, though: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/12/16/vulture_2_transportation/?page=2

                Re: LOHAN

Would launching from a great altitude be of any advantage? Like the Atacama plains? And can you take your motors across the Mexican border?

                  Re: Re: LOHAN

No advantage launching from altitude. No idea about rocket motors and Mexico. We'd probably need an armoured truck and Army escort, though.

You know Atacama is *not* in Mexico, right?

I'm not sure about the legal status of rockets in Chile, but it is a peaceful enough country (barring the odd earthquake)... no army escort required

Yeah, I've kind of got a handle on where Atacama is.

                What was the regs cock-up?

I ask because a friend of a friend of mine is involved in (very!) large pyrotechinics. Whilst I can't volunteer his services, it's always worth asking knowledgeable professionals about such things...

I don't know why you don't combine LOHAN with another Reg hobby and launch the damn thing from Rockall?

South Africa? India? Both should have suitable beer for the Playmonaut

    Let's create a Venn diagram...

    - Places that have the rocket, but don't allow you to launch them you - the US

    - Places that don't have the rocket, but would allow you to launch them - the EU

What you need - and I'm no rocket surgeon here - is a union of places that have the rocket AND a place that let you use them.

A simple bit of analytics and maths would have saved years of battling both Spain and the US to get LOHAN off the ground.

So you tie the rocket to a balloon (which you were going to do anyway), check the winds for a couple of days that will cause it to drift from the US to the UK, launch the balloon, then once LOHAN is over the UK fire the rocket.

Does it have to be those rocket motors?

Surely you can adapt, it's been quite a long while now.

Some of us invested in the kickstarter have lost enthusiasm.

If this was my workplace the project would of been scrapped.

    Umm...

Have you actually contacted these guys? http://www.ukra.org.uk/

Pretty sure that if they cant import the load you require that some of them could instead build an equivalent load to the same specs and dimensions. And if you cannot get an explosives licence (which might not even be needed - see here http://www.ukra.org.uk/legal) then all it would take is to ask one of the members who does have such a licence to join your merry group and store the materials.
