back to article What's the transistors-on-a-chip record?

What is the current record for the number of transistors on a chip? Any sort: processor, graphics, memory, etc. Just wondering exactly how many hundreds of millions - or probably billions - the industry has actually achieved.   hp wireless chip

    Itanium

In February 2008 Intel claimed it has fabricated a chip with 2,000,000,000 transisters. This should be commercially available under the 'Itanium' brand name.

My mate Dave says he about to go public with a 2,000,000,001 transister chip but I don't believe him.

Yeah, that seems to be about it.

I was going to mention the nVidia 280GTX or Intel's quad core Penryn, but they're only ~1 billion and ~0.9 billion (when you count both die within the package) respectively.

What's scary about it is that those 2 billion transistors are fabbed with the 65nm process, not 45nm. That chip has got to be HUGE! It probably wouldn't be able to fit in a LGA socket even if they tried.

    What about memory chips?
