back to article Writing on the wall for Australian Technology Park

Software developer Atlassian’s well-and-truly-off-core-mission tilt at property development has failed, with the state government preferring a Mirvac-led proposal for the Australian Technology Park at Redfern to a bid that didn't make the deadline. And it's not just the soon-to-IPO vendor (still laughingly referred to as a …

    >the bank's move provides an opportunity to re-imagine the precinct

Translation: we have already been approached by the property developers. A few small changes and we stand to gain hugely from stamp duty, developer levies and future ministerial job opportunities. Additionally we are building a great big hole from somewhere close to Olympic Park to somewhere close to Redfern. Funnelling commuters from the newly re-imagined precinct to their relocated desks should help to minimise taxpayer risk on said hole. For bonus points we get to undermine the union dominated city rail / Sydney trains network. Life is good!

Correction for article - CBA has no significant data centre facilities at Sydney Olympic Park (SOP). The two primary data centres are Burwood and Norwest.

SOP houses some call centre staff and a majority of the banks IT Operations staff.

And the SMH article saying that employees were angry about the decision, thats BS, most staff at SOP are happy to be moving back closer to the city, as we were all moved out here about 7 or so years ago...at which time we were all pissed off about being put in a location with no pubs to go to after work and shithouse public transport.

    "and TV broadcaster Channel 7"

I'm not sure if this stands as a correct, but the Channel 7 logos have vanished from the building, and been replaced with something else. It's been a while since I've passed the area, so can't remember what it is now.

On another note, we're running out of larger venues for exhibitions. Darling Harbour is now high density housing, ATP is becoming CBA, which leaves perhaps Homebush park. There is obscenely priced parking available, but you get a mini train/trolley/fun ride. If you came via public transport (which they're actively encouraging) you don't the the trolley and have to walk like a knob to the railway station. Sucks to be you if your legs are stuffed.

The obvious solution is for atlassian to move west. Amirite?

Okay, I get that this is WAY late to the party but hey - whatever geolocation algorithms The Reg employs put this article right up the top for me.

The NSW government should be looking to SPREAD jobs around as much as possible, not concentrate them even more into the city and surrounding areas. Moving jobs from Parramatta means that trains will be more crowded. If someone is at Strathfield, they current go 'against the flow'. If that jobs moves to the city, they are now adding to the congestion. If someone lives at Blacktown, instead of freeing up space when they get off at Parramatta, they continue on.

This is a big reason why the whole Barangaroo project is and will we so bad for Sydney congestion. And no, a tram won't fix it.
