At time of publication, Dropbox was claiming on its official status page that services were running normally again. However, a quick scan of "Dropbox down" tweets …

As of 1228 EDT, Dropbox is working on the US East Coast. In any event, it's not like I use it for high-priority stuff. If it goes down for a while, I can wait for it, and if it disappears forever, the contents are either replaceable or expendable.

In any case unless you have only ever used the web interface (which is unlikely) or have deliberately only "selective sync"'d certain parts of your Dropbox contents you'll have a complete copy of your files on a machine you own.

I'm immediately sceptical of anything "cloudy" but Dropbox does generally work pretty well for some businesses who haven't the resources to run their own solution.

Fine here now (17:44 BST), of course the beauty of it for me is that I have a copy of all my files locally...

          Any port in a storm…?

Preferably one with an external backup drive attached to it

Re: Any port in a storm…?

DB going down only means (for the vast majority) that your local changes are not getting backed up for a few hours. Probably not a big deal.

There will be a few people who need to sync to a new device - setting up a new PC or something - but that will be a tiny minority in the timescale in question.

Re: So a BOFH screwed up?

If a BOFH did it it was probably to teach someone a lesson/get someone fired. Perhaps a well-loved on-call bonus was at risk because some PHB said "we never have out of hours emergencies?"
