British Airways has denied that an exploding BlackBerry was to blame for a flight diversion this afternoon. AirLive.net tweeted that an errant BlackBerry caused Flight BA18 to make an unscheduled landing in Russia at around 1pm local time. But according to BA: “This is incorrect. There was no exploding BlackBerry. Our crew …

    Bah!

"Nahnahnahnahnah. It wouldn't do that. Nah."

"But we have actual in-plane GoBlow camera footage showing someone screaming as his hand is engulfed in a fireball while doing his e-mail and the cabin staff squirting him with fire extinguishers."

"Well, it did that, yeah. But he had broken the unwritten law".

"There was no exploding BlackBerry. Our crew took the decision to divert the aircraft as a precaution after a fault with a customer's personal device"

Any the nearest Blackberry service centre was in Irkutsk?

Maybe causing batteries to go on fire is a design feature of dreamliners rather than a defect?

Well, at least it didn't cause the plane to crash or whatever as the pilot was able to safely land and take off again.

So there you have it, if your phone explodes, don't worry, the plane will be fine, your ass or your hand on the other hand will smell a bit like crispy bacon.... mmmm.. bacon...

    Anyhows, all is well. :-).

...if you happen to be an asian guy innocently using a blackberry on the plane

Err... Maybe it wasn't a blackberry, there are other black phones with rounded corners that have a history of doing this.

    Fortunately

there was no one on board the airplane who the Russian authorities wanted to arrest while the plane was on their soil.

Some kind of international agreement is needed to prevent this kind of problem arising, however. When there is an unscheduled emergency stop, airplanes and so on should enjoy the same status as an embassy of the country in which they are registered.

Are there any international agreements that says a host country must allow an "embassy" to take-off after it has made an unscheduled emergency stop?

The international law is yet to be designed where a country sufficiently endowed with exceptionalism is unable to flout.

    Meh

Why didn't one of those arrogant BA females ...

simply COMMAND the device to stop smoking.

I saw one of these creatures assaulting a toilet door demanding it stop smoking. It had the temerity not to respond.
