back to article Reddit caves to Russian fungus censorship demands

Reddit has been banned and then unbanned in Russia, following the 4chan-lite site's decision to block domestic access in the country to a single page on growing mushrooms. After following through with its threat to censor the site over pages advising on "the cultivation of narcotic plants" [sic], Russian telecommunications …

I thought it was supposed to be that someone posted a krokadil recipe. Now it's some shit about hallucinogenic mushrooms. Big deal.

"[...] why Daddy comes home late at night every Friday and beats the crap out of Mummy."

If they have a mummy and daddy to live with. It was not long ago - during the Yeltsin era - that Moscow had a legion of abandoned children living in underground tunnels in the winter. My memory says 80,000 - but that seems too high? Not sure if the problem is still so bad. All the Google hits are for organisations with a vested interest in under or over-stating such numbers - and tend to concentrate on the plight of young disabled children.

Good information is how you deal with a drug problem. And possibly not tanking your economy by stealth-invading a neighbouring country; thus inviting sanctions and creating the conditions for a drug problem to get really big.

      vodka only

Mushrooms are too good for the people of Putin's Russia. Keeping them hooked on Russian water will keep them sad and slow.

Got nothing against the people of Russia. The administration could do with sorting their shit out though.

Just as an aside - it's been a few years since the shrooming days. Has anyone managed to breed a variety that don't taste like old slippers yet?

They all taste rank but I had some mushroom chocolate in Ibiza this summer which was delicious. it was scored (no pun intended) into squares which made adjusting the intensity easier too.

So.... every episode of Dr Who featuring Daleks then?

It was the shouting "hate sessions" in front of a large screen with a picture of Big Brother that scared me as a 1950s kid. The BBC "Nineteen Eighty Four" was a low budget drama serial - but has stuck in my mind.

Modern day real life often gives me a feeling of deja vu.

Interesting story also about the sound track. Branson wanted a soundtrack by the Eurythmics who were very big at the time and the director changed it.

"Julia" is the only song by the Eurythmics that made it onto the movie and only at the credits. It is still my favorite song by them.

Definitely not now Dumbledore has been outed. Both Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church would see to that - even if they overlooked the sorcery.

"On Protecting Children from Information Harmful to Their Health and Development".

So Putin's TV broadcasts are going to be banned? About time. Seeing that closet homo with his shirt off attempting to look macho while hunting bears / fishing / horseriding / shooting peasants is enough to stunt the mental development of any child. Probably make them turn gay as well.

It's because mushrooms sometimes resemble penises.

    Oh, well...

Congratulations to El Reg for doing the Western propaganda thing for free.

UK bans album cover art showing nude teenagers, no probs. UK/US/EU censor beheading videos and stuff (disgusting and extremely insensitive, but a form of political discourse in the end, although highly extreme), and that's the right thing to do.

Some Russian agency or another complains about some drug info posted online, and it's the horrors.

No hypocrisy or double standards at all, eh?

Anyway, thank you for keeping your readers like mushrooms in the dark (apologies) about the realities of the East. Problems there are, but this is hardly one of them.

      Re: Oh, well...

To be fair - El Reg, and most who comment here, tend to be vociferously against censorship measures in the UK/US/EU too. Usually the objections are that the government, and/or vested interests, are trying to promote censorship measures that are: ill-conceived; unworkable; draconian; intended to manipulate the public for political support or funding.

    This sucks for many reasons.

Not only is psilocin handy for treating depression without resorting to ineffectiv and highly addictive SSRIs and other potentially dangerous long term drugs such as lithium (google it) and also could one day unlock the secret to duplicating consciousness itself in hardware thus bringing about the Singularity (yay!) but it would also explain how it originated in the first place thus why humans seem to be conscious but other animals are merely self-aware.

Psilocin is one of a class of "connectivity modulators" that changes how neurons communicate on a global level but as the mechanism is very specific it can be clearly seen on an fMRI or PET scan.

This lends it to all sorts of valuable studies on human neural systems and can allow pharmacalogically similar drugs (eg triptans) to be used safely by seeing how the subject reacts within a range of doses.
