back to article New US cyber laws will hit privacy and security, says Homeland Security

The US Department of Homeland Security is hardly what you'd think of as a bunch of whining lefties, but even this agency has come out against the proposed Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act. In a letter [PDF] to Senator Al Franken (D-MN), Alejandro Mayorkas, the deputy secretary of the DHS, said that the proposed American …

    Getting scary...

When DHS gives a rat's patootie about citizen "privacy"... it's time to be afraid... very afraid. That they seem more concerned about not being the clearing house for all the information speaks more about the power centers in Washington than anything else. Unbelievable....

    Cyber War

Yes, there is a massive cyber war going on - between US agencies as they compete to be the one in charge of cyber stuff. Has been for years.

Its like one of those cop movies with 4 different sorts of cops argue about who has jurisdiction while the suspects flee.

They have also realised that the internet is no respecter of geographical boundaries and that agencies tied to physical boundaries are unable to deal with this, which creates bizarre US Federal Agency underhand cooperative strategies.

Pathetic really, but I suppose this stuff is all so new that nobody knows how to deal with it yet (*irony*)

      Re: Cyber War

"They" know Exactly how to deal with it, they are dealing right now - it's exactly the same games that was played during the Cold War, during the War on Drugs, the War on Terror and now the Cyber War.

A multitude of powerful government agencies, their crony contractors, privately-sponsored think thanks, and corrupted procurement officers joining forces, forging different alliances and clans, yet all united in one purpose: To scam Uncle Sap for as much money as possible!

Problem is that they are getting so efficient at it that it is possible that the US economy will go the same way as USSR.

    Sad...

That a senator who was a former comedian is now one of our best and hardest-working legislators.

      Re: Sad...

I think that might be a plus... being a comedian gives him a sense of cynicism and irony which politics seems to be full of. Maybe we need to elect more comedians?

Jon Stewart for Senate, anyone? He'll be at loose ends shortly....

Not sad. Just shows that, for a change, someone was elected who cares more about the people that elected him than about lining their own pocket.

    At war

Am I the only one who thinks the picture accompanying this article looks like a group of soldiers at war, rather than a police force?
