back to article Russia campaigns to stop SUICIDALLY STUPID selfies

Russia's Interior Ministry has started an education campaign to convince the populace that high-flying, high-risk selfies can kill. Assistant Minister of Internal Affairs, Lieutenant Colonel of Police Elena Alekseeva, yesterday launched the “safety selfie” programme after several Russian citizens came to grisly ends whilst …

Unfortunately you do have to tell some people this sort of advice.

      Never underestimate human stupidity.

Yes, they will be warning against taunting crocodiles before jumping in the water with them next.

      Grim-faced killjoys.

On a somewhat related topic, I've sometimes wondered why you Brits don't have a Good Riddance day every July 5th. I would.

Sure it was the selfie stick?

Didn't being at the top of a mountain in a thunderstorm have quite a bit to do with it?

First rule of thunderstorms: don't be the nearest thing to them on the ground!

Sorry, I know this doesn't excuse selfie-stickness but come on!

Re: Sure it was the selfie stick?

Yes. Sure it was the selfie* stick. But it wasn't the electrical conductivity of the stick that caused the lightning strike - it was the judgement of $DEITY on selfie-takers. One down, 999,999,999 to go.

This kind of trend started after the OId Bush, IIRC.

It went downhill since. At one point, we were talking about what the definition of the word "is" is, now we are down to scraping hope & change from the bottom of barrels and detecting HITLER every week, if not THE ECONOMY IS IMPROVING and RAAH KIM KARDASHIAN'S ARSE.

Is that a hobby or something ? I'm supposing that it isn't any more legal in Russia than in any other country, so WTF ?

Do they really drink that much vodka ?

Sort of. To be honest, risk perception and attitudes towards it are *really* not in the same league as those of the Western European middle class. The Russian text accompanying the icon says a school kid got electrocuted on one of those.

Anytime there's an awesome video of people doing crazy stuff

I don't even have to look, it is always Russians. Taking dangerous selfies is the tip of the iceberg. Those guys are nuts, must be all the vodka!

If it wasn't for Russia, the MTV show Ridiculousness would have half as many episodes, and Youtube would have a much higher ratio of cat videos.

In America, kids play Call of Duty to fight fictional wars. In Putin Russia, kids go out to street to fight street brawl wars!

In America, kids play GTA to do dangerous driving stunts. In Putin Russia, everyone drives like that in real life!

In America, kids play Assassin's Creed. In Putin Russia, they do parkour themselves while using selfie sticks to record themselves!

Maybe Russians just need more videogames.
