back to article FCC boss Wheeler: Shove off, big dogs – let the small telcos play

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chief Tom Wheeler has proposed new rules for upcoming wireless spectrum auctions which will limit large telcos' ability to snap up space meant for small carriers. By entering smaller subsidiaries into the small business spectrum auctions, larger carriers are able to bid for more of the …

The FCC can “create more frequences”?

“The FCC chairman said that the upcoming wireless spectrum auction, designed to create more frequencies for use by wireless broadband networks, would receive additional rules on eligibility should the FCC commissioners pass his recommendations at the July 16 open meeting.”

The FCC must be more powerful than anyone imagined if they create more frequencies just by holding an auction... oh wait, you mean “sell off rights to more spectrum...”. Is Stephen Fry now working for The Reg by any chance?

    Won't stop them

But I find it interesting that 'one of their own' seems to have made serious attempts to reign in the bully-boys.

    Wheeler is the surprise hero.

Removing the facilities-based provisions is similar to Local Loop Unbundling; a good thing indeed.

it is common in Europe but not so common in the US because of monopolies (!).

It will introduce more flexibility in packages and specific savings as these smaller providers pursue niche markets.

However, those changes will also need controls on the charges imposed by the facilities-provider.

LLU is effectively non-existant in the USA, so this is a surprise.

Perhaps for an encore he may try to mandate it on landlines?

Never happen - the telcos have the FCC chair on his (financial) leash, and if he tries to ram things through; they will jerk him back in line, like most punters would do with a disobedient dog.

I mean, he isn't planning to stay with the FCC for the rest of his career, now is he?? Can't fuck up the post-FCC career opportunities, now would he?

    compete, survive and succeed.

Our economy is in a rut because new players were discouraged in the past leading to a stagnant economy. With the new policies there will be more competition allowing a chance to who so ever wants to compete, survive and succeed. New ideas do not exist in just large corporations. FCC is revolutionizing the rule; if any one out there have guts to take risks we have a ticket for you for Open Competition.
