...that has do deal with installing Telco lines will tell you what an ustter cluster-fuck of mis-matched regulations and exclusivity by the back door T&C's there are.
Want to drop a circuit into Country Y no problem, pick your carrier and away you go. However country Z, you have to chose an approved Telco provider, of which there is one, which so happens to be pretty much government owned. Want to send "spoofed"* caller id, no problem in country A, but nightmare in country B. And so on and so on.
*spoofed caller ID are actually a very good thing for many. You may want to send the main company number, not the default circuit number, which may work at only certain points in time.
Sure, especially those who want to piss you off with all sorts of junk calls.
*IF* someone wants to use a central contact number for their company, they should be able to do so, but that should be registered with the appropriate Regulator and subject to withdrawl if abused.
I call India, Kenya and Dubai from the UK and elsewhere regularly and the quality of calls on Skype is generally higher than landline and much better than mobile. Where I live there is no mobile reception, but there is wifi, so WhatsApp actually is a better service.
Wifi is at least as ubiquitous as mobile and much, much cheaper.
....and you are missing the point completely... I would like to see you using WhatsUp and Skype when you go abroad and you have no internet access or it costs you an arm and a leg... and then get calls to your skype from a normal mobile or landline (which costs a lot more than a standard mobile) to add to the cost of data traffic needed for the incoming call...
According to the article, telcos, who are not deemed worth quoting, employ "lobbyists", but the Center for Democracy and Technology, which is quoted, is a "non profit".
The CDT is a Google-funded lobbying group. Other groups which receive massive corporate funding from Big Internet are also quoted. They're for the people! So that must be alright.
I would expect both telcos and Big Tech to be lobbying hard on this hard, since everyone wants a free lunch. But the writer thinks we're too stupid to notice.
