back to article Virtual reality pr0n on the Rift? 'Why not?' says Oculus founder

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has said the company will allow pornography on its VR buckets, as Oculus is committed to creating an open platform. Speaking at Silicon Valley's Virtual Reality Conference in San Jose, 22-year old Oculus founder Palmer Luckey was asked whether his company would be blocking adult content on its …

      Re: The Red Dress

Now if El Reg *really* wanted to do something clever with their silly Hero Images, they could have it switch from the Woman in the Red Dress to Agent Smith if you moused over it...

I guess that makes el reg a smut-rag and pimp.

I arrived via RSS feed though, so had no indication there was a red dress before it appeared.

      ps. Is she a cylon?

    Could they block it?

Isn't the Rift basically 2 monitors strapped to the eyes with software doing the heavy lifting? How could OR block porn, or anything really, from being displayed?

If I go into a computer store and look at the monitors there, I don't feel the need to ask the sales drone "scuse me mate, does this 27 inch 1440 monitor let me watch porn?"

On a closed platform (console), yeah, they could block adult games but on an open system like a PC, trying to block something is not really an option, so it's not that the Rift is open, it's that the system powering the Rift is open, just like the legs of that chick in the porn game from Japan, wait, why the hell do I have tentacles instead of arms? WHAT?

      Re: Could they block it?

well.. in theory they could, if they had chosen the proprietary driver/interface route for the thing. How long it would last before that was cracked is another matter, of course..

In the end the adult industry will adopt it, or make Stuff for it, if there's $$ in it for them. The niche market is pretty much low-turnover high-profit, so no doubt we'll see reports of something in that direction within a year after the set is available.

ITYM "the adult industry will be one of the first to adopt it" - as they did with VHS and other leading edge tech (including websites)

Rift - Isn't the difference the positioning telemetry feedback?

Anyway, didn't el reg do a thing on this kind of tech and come to the realisation that VR isn't anywhere near realistic enough to be interesting, but that telepresence was the thing? I guess cartoon-style visuals may be fast enough to model and render in real-time.

I'm not convinced that mechanical realism trumps imagination in this scenario. I'm with Stallone on this one.

When a nerd gets hot and heavy, there's a two kilo copper air cooler and three-way SLI titans involved. It seems... wrong.

    Fitted barf bag?

As a bit of releif from all the porn experts:

I led a team developing a high-performance headset like Oculus some years ago. Our test bed was a copy of Descent, with very high-res graphics and really fast GPU processing. We found that 1 user out of 3 couldn't take the "roll-over" at the start of Descent, where the user dives down a mine shaft.

We kept a bucket by the test setup!

      Re: Fitted barf bag?

Was there any kind of debriefing of the "1" in 3? Would be interesting to know if they are motion sensitive, or the inability to keep in mind "only a game" I can't be hurt.

      1. Jim O'Reilly

        Re: Fitted barf bag?

I'm pretty sure it was motion sickness. I felt disoriented on the rollover (which was the standard game entry video. The image quality emphasized the motion and the headset reacted to head tilt etc. Typically, viewers looked sideways to watch the tunnel walls, which definitely contributed to the problem, since they were caught by surprise at the rollover.

I imagine that when it comes to retail OculusBook could license the API out to those deemed worthy. You can do whatever you want, as long as you pay us and we think it'll sell.
