back to article Nuclear fusion simulator among boffinry tools picked for monster Summit supercomputer

In November, the US government announced it will build Summit, a $325m supercomputer capable of performing 300 quadrillion calculations per second if you redline it. When installed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2017 and powered up by 2018, it will be the fastest computer in the world compared to its publicly known …

    At last!

    Something that *can* run Crysis!

But can it run Crysis with full detail and antialiasing on?

    "Models seismic wave propagation through"

    Um, through what exactly ?

And, pray tell, but what source other than thermonuclear power drives supernovae ?

Come now, you didn't really think that you could slip that by unnoticed on this site, now did you ?

Re: "Models seismic wave propagation through"

Gravity drives a supernova, if anything the thermonuclear fusion reactions in most SN collapses are energy negative.

Re: "Models seismic wave propagation through"

Actually no - typa 1a, pair instability supernova etc etc...

Nice to see that the edge of the tokamak is getting the attention it deserves they still have modelled edge localised modes properly yet

Re: "Models seismic wave propagation through"

EVERYTHING. All the things get the seismic simulation. That's how powerful this computer is, they are simply going to model every possible seismic scenario with every substance in existence and many that are only theoretical.

Re: "Models seismic wave propagation through"

Hmmm. I wonder if seismic beam-forming is possible using judiciously placed underground nuke detonations the same way we use multiple antennae with RF... do I get a few free time slots on that thing to check...?

    Cray are still around?

Presumably their computers now look like hipster converted warehouse studio apartments.

    hypercomputation unnecessary

There is no need of super ultra power hyper-computation to realize that aneutronic reactors are more promising than behemoth tokamaks. http://youtu.be/u8n7j5k-_G8
