back to article Shove off, ugly folk, says site for people who love themselves

The hotness police at BeautifulPeople.com have reportedly booted off 3,000 ugly folk, telling them "their looks no longer come up to the rigorous standards expected". The site, which helps people looking for love who love themselves meet other people looking for love who love themselves, periodically reviews the suitability of …

And I was lead to believe the standards were high. Doesn't look like she was anywhere near the front of the queue when the beauty gene was being handed out and after reading her statement I would hazard a tentative guess that she was probably first in line for the dumb blonde gene.

And here come the usual parade of people needing to disparage the looks of someone who is generally considered attractive to make themselves sound superior. Or if it is not possible to disparage their looks, to make unsupported claims about how they must be shallow or dumb. Because as we all know, you only get a couple of good qualities when you're born and if you choose looks or popularity, you must also be stupid or shallow.

Don't like the site, don't join. Don't like that they turn away people who don't meet their standards? Same is true when I interview someone for a job (or am interviewed). Different people want different things from a partner. What is wrong with specialist dating sites in principle?

How so? I haven't seen her disparaging the looks of anybody here. Claiming some sort of first strike from her seems unsupported. Also, your regex will lead to a lot of false positives. Try the far less exciting but accurate "Mrs|Miss|Ms".

Unfortunately for you, it's rather too late as you already attempted to be clever with your first regex and messed it up (a very simple Mrs / Miss / Ms) that included an infinite set of false positives. Normally it's not that important but given that this thread is mainly people making unsupported statements about the intelligence of people they don't know, I figured I might as well point out some of the flaws.

As to "pre-emptive disparagement". Not really convinced. People are making lots of insults of the intelligence, personality and looks of people they've never even met and you're attempting to say she started it by being a member of a club. Has she come here and made personal attacks such as people here are doing? Has she turned down any of the posters here and said they're not good enough to be members? I don't think either is true and I don't see being a member of a specialist dating site constitutes attacks on people here who may or may not be members. It's not like El. Reg has been targeted and told we're not good enough for the club.

That is correct. When I see a regular expression with an asterisk on the end, I read it as part of the expression. Natural enough, I would have thought. Anyway, my mistake I suppose. I tend to put regex's on their own line in a post. Or use delimiters.

I don't see that it relates to intelligence at all. I have been stuck on a plane next to some large and unpleasant people and not liked it but my dislike has not stemmed from intelligence or lack of. It's a matter of preference uninformed by that. As to shallow, no, I don't think that's true either. Shallow would be if I only cared about that criteria. Having it as a criteria amongst others does not make one shallow.

What one is attracted to or seeks in a romantic partner is not all that defines somebody. There are a lot of interesting or complicated people who have a wide range of talents, interests or work that makes them fascinating. If I find that a writer or director or scientist who's work I find fascinating or has interesting views on things happens to like physical qualities X or Y in their sexual partners, I don't immediately call that person shallow. Nor should you. But that is what you are doing here, if you think about it.

Nothing, I suppose. Each to their own, and all that. Putting aside the comments of the girl in the picture and taking the view of the airheads who frequent such a site, she isn't all that hot. Sure, caked in makeup and with the professional (or decent amateur) shot plus possible retouching she looks moderately attractive in the photo, but take all that away and she's just plain. I imagine she's no beauty first thing in the morning.

But she talks of herself as though she's a stunner, and has completely set herself up for scrutiny. That's what I take issue with.

Because as we all know, you only get a couple of good qualities when you're born and if you choose looks or popularity, you must also be stupid or shallow.

I think it's more a case of, if you judge people solely by their looks, then you are 'stupid or shallow'. Stupid, because people have no choice over the looks they are born with, and shallow, because when it comes to the vast number of attributes that a person may possess, their looks are a single one.

Judging people based on their appearance would appear to be the sole function of this site, so it is reasonable to conclude that the users are, in fact, quite likely to be stupid and shallow individuals.

The featured individual's reference to 'polluting the gene pool' also smacks rather of eugenics, which doesn't exactly endear her to me.

The horribly grey area involving bigotry / discrimination legislation, IMO. If they specialise in interests or activities then fair enough, but when they specialise purely in physical characteristics, it does start to skirt dangerously close to existing discrimination legislation.

Or if it is not possible to disparage their looks, to make unsupported claims about how they must be shallow or dumb.

Regarding Ms. Lynn, then I am perfectly happy judging her purely on her words:

“If the management failed to maintain the quality of the site by polluting the gene pool, most members would leave. ... It would make BeautifulPeople just like every other dating site – full of the kind of people you wouldn’t want to share an elevator with, let alone date.”

What is wrong with mocking them, on principle?

Also, of course, people who pronounce themselves beautiful are opening the door for disparagement.1 And they're guilty of a category error, since while some aspects of physical attractiveness seem to be cross-cultural (e.g. facial symmetry), beauty is largely evaluated on subjective grounds that are highly culturally inflected. The pictures I found claiming to be of Lynn don't meet my standards, and I'd guess the same would be true of many of their members. There's no reason they should care about that, but having pronounced themselves beautiful according to some arbitrary metric, they have no defense against being evaluated, in public, against other such.

Now, as to whether she's shallow, stupid, etc, I cannot say; perhaps she's simply playing the role in order to take advantage of people who are shallow and stupid. In which case more power to her.

I have a rule of thumb...

.. that is usually borne out, viz. beauty is inversely proportional to personality.

Beautiful people can get by on their looks, so don't have to be nice. Less beautiful people develop good personalities in order to be liked. I've ..um.. "known" .. enough of both types to know who I'd rather spend more than a night with.

    2. h4rm0ny

Because just because you're physically beautiful. doesn't mean you necessarily have more opportunities to meet people or that you will necessarily get approached by people you like. People do not automatically approach a girl because she is beautiful (or turn out to be single when they do). Indeed, many men will be more likely to approach a girl who is plain or dresses so, on the basis they think that girl is more likely to like them.

      1. Paul Crawford Silver badge

        @h4rm0ny

You are right to a point. Someone who is above-average in terms of attractiveness is not guaranteed to get attention from folk that they want, maybe because they are afraid of rejection as the presume such a person is overwhelmed by offers.

True, but I was responding simply to someone's argument that if these people were attractive they would not find a dating site useful. It's a rebuttal to someone arguing how the patrons can't be attractive because they use the site.

    Life Imitates Art?

There's an episode of Family Guy where Peter Griffin has plastic surgery and joins a club like this.

That was very funny, as satirical TV cartoon shows go, but it's fucking weird when it happens for real.

    That's Life.

I understand the argument about shallowness, etc, but I wonder how many people up/downvoting the comments here would pick a partner they couldn't stand to kiss or sleep with? Be honest - how often do you see someone you find ugly but you think "Well, if they're kind and fun to be with, I still would"? Yeah, right.

Face it, what do you call someone you don't fancy but get along with well? A friend.

We're attracted to partners by their looks. If you can't stomach kissing someone, they're not going to be a lover, are they? This may not be PC or comfortable to some people, but that's the way it is. I know I'm stuffed now that I'm old, grey, waistband-challenged, and balding, but I've come to accept it. I had my time when I was young and had hair, but now it's all over. Women used to look at me occasionally, but now I'm invisible unless it's cold and I'm wearing a woolly hat and they can't see my lack of hair!

So, you are happy to accept that the 'hive mind' of this website can select people for you? Do you have no opinions of your own? Are you insecure enough to think that, if this site's moderators dont think that a person is hot enough for you, you shouldn't be subjected to their photo? Would an image of someone who doesn't meet some kind of accepted attractiveness criteria offend you? Are you that easily led / stupid?

Happy to have the occasional story about this site, as it provides the opportunity for the minging like myself to point and laugh at 'hotties' who are the gullible, stupid, shallow, insecure, narcisistic and therefore totally unnatractive people who'd want to be a member of such a site.

        Re: That's Life.

        >>"So, you are happy to accept that the 'hive mind' of this website can select people for you?"

To some extent, yes. It's not as if all the members conform to some precise look and type - people can look very different to each other but still both be hot. But this site weeds out a lot of those that I wouldn't find hot and that saves time. Furthermore, the staff actually reach out to people and check that the photos are of them, that they're up to date and not heavily photoshopped. You can't say that of most dating sites. So sure - it's a useful service to verify and gather people one might want to date. And it's not as if this is the only way one can meet potential partners. Being a member doesn't mean that you wont meet that one colleague / friend of a friend / etc. but it also gives you somewhere to go where you will meet the type of people you want to date. (You meaning someone who signs up to the site). For people who have difficult work lives, that's a major boon.

        >>"Do you have no opinions of your own?"

I think anyone who has read my frequent posts on El Reg's forums can confirm that I very definitely have opinions of my own. They kick in as stage two when I (or the other person) start looking through the candidates. You seem to be presenting this as the site coming to your house and saying: "here is your date. You will like them". It's not, it's a service that provides people you might like and weeds out the ones you probably wont. And if in the ones that were weeded out is someone you might have got on with, you probably would have wanted them as a friend instead anyway.

        >>"Are you insecure enough to think that, if this site's moderators dont think that a person is hot enough for you, you shouldn't be subjected to their photo? "

Not sure how insecurity follows from others deciding an applicant isn't "hot enough" for me. But no, either way.

        >>"Would an image of someone who doesn't meet some kind of accepted attractiveness criteria offend you?

It would detract from the value of the site, much the same way it wastes my time when someone turns up for an interview who isn't qualified for the job. It would also waste their time as a member of the site is likely only to want to date people who are generally regarded as physically attractive.

        >>"Are you that easily led / stupid?"

Again, not sure how not seeing an image of someone unattractive leads to meaning someone is stupid, but again, no.

        >>"Happy to have the occasional story about this site, as it provides the opportunity for the minging like myself to point and laugh at 'hotties' who are the gullible, stupid, shallow, insecure, narcisistic and therefore totally unnatractive people who'd want to be a member of such a site."

I find your attitude far more aggressive, insulting and generally filled with preconceived stereotypes than people simply voluntarily signing up to a service where they meet attractive potential partners. Evidence that people who use the service are more gullible? Or insecure? Or are you just bringing the assumptions into play that support your worldview?

I had the page sorted by Newest First and mistakenly thought your post was a reply to my own. So consider the rest of my post to be valid but the part about opinions only to apply to me. I don't post as an AC. Hmmm, one of those had to be there. ;)

      Re: That's Life.

You seem to be inferring that being attracted to someone is 1) purely a function of physical appearance 2) everyone shares the same objective standard of beauty. Everyone has met people that people that would be deemed gorgeous by standard media conventions and who turns out to be insanely dull or dim-witted or self-absorbed. Likewise, everyone has met someone who isn't much to look at it but is great fun or who has a certain charisma. Attraction is a complex and multifactorial phenomena. This site basically just focuses on singular aspect, probably the detriment of all others.

I look like a train wreck of an individual but I married someone who most people deem to be very attractive. She was far wealthier than I am, quite possibly more intelligent and what some uncharitable individuals might describe as "completely out of my league". I am a pretty decent type of fellow though I think, sometimes amusing and I try to treat people with respect. This includes not assuming that everyone shares my thoughts and opinions on subjects. Something to think about perhaps...

The best thing about being a minger is that the ageing process is just a rearrangement of unattractive flesh, rather than the loss of something you had.

    Look out MENSA

Presumably, the MENSA website is in for the same sort of abuse. After all, what's the difference? This website is for beautiful people only (how you judge that I'm not too sure), whereas MENSA is for people with very high IQs.

It's always struck me that both represent a lot of stuck up people, trying to lord it around over some perceived advantage they have.

If beautiful people are considered airheads etc. (as has been suggested in many posts), does this mean people belonging to MENSA are all ugly hags?

    1. smartypants

      Re: Look out MENSA

Actually, that was a good point you made.

      From the Mensa home page:

"Mensa aims to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity."

Or alternatively, somewhere you can chat with like-minded individuals about how lucky you are to be so brainy.

It seems incredibly dull and though I am spectacularly clever(*) I wouldn't want to rub shoulders with the sorts of people who select themselves into little groups like this.

Yes, I thought it was as well!! Perhaps I should apply for MENSA? What an appalling thought.

The one character trait that really irritates me beyond all others is people who are completely up themselves. Don't care what the trait is.....beauty, money, intelligence, impeccable dress sense. You name it.

Anybody who runs around letting others know how superior they are in some sense or another is generally a poor person in my book. A little hubris goes a long way.

Personally, I'm all for becoming the founder member of www.richandhandsomeandintelligentandhunglikeadonkey.com.

      Re: Look out MENSA

The most beautiful, the most intelligent; these websites are, to some extent an expression of their desire to be seen to be superior to some other group of people.

I am superior to those that clean toilets for a living, because I do not. Therefore I have right to treat them with insult and injury.

      We're all full of shit.

    3. fearnothing

      Re: Look out MENSA

The guy who founded MENSA eventually washed his hands of the organisation. He wanted it to be a gathering of people of great ability so that they could combine their efforts for the improvement of humankind. Instead the result was, in his own words, "mental masturbation".

Tells you a lot about humans, really.

Funny thing, though, is that the work of even the most skilled plastic surgeons does not transmit to offspring. So one could argue that people on this site who owe their beauty to silicone and surgery could be doing a disservice to the "gene pool"; imagine the horror in the delivery room when the product of two "beautiful people" turns out to be very very different and then there's some 'splainin to do (as the attending nurses try to suppress their laughter).
