In the arms race for faster data speeds, Nokia Networks has pulled out 600Mbps over Ericsson’s 450Mbps by using 4X4 Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology. A demo with South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom started with a mere 300Mbps using 20MHz of contiguous spectrum and then using carrier aggregation with LTE-A …

You want manufacturers to be prohibited from doing R&D until telcos roll out older technology globally?
I'm not sure that would work terribly well. What are we talking - 100% global coverage or would you settle for a lower figure? I'd be reluctant to give up my 3/4G mobile as a 'banned technology' until someone manages to roll out TACS to the North Pole and Sahara desert.
I guess you mean backhaul?
My guess - and it's only a guess mind you - is that they won't use a 3Mbps ADSL link to provide the core connections to a cell serving data at 600Mbps. They'll probably use something a lot faster. It also won't be ADSL as phone conversations tend usually to involve transmission in both directions.
Researchers at the University of Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) managed one terabit per second (Tbps) - many thousands of times faster than current data connections. The head of the 5GIC said he hoped to demonstrate the technology to the public in 2018. According to news website V3, 5GIC director Prof Rahim Tafazolli said: "We have developed 10 more breakthrough technologies and one of them means we can exceed 1Tbps wirelessly. This is the same capacity as fibreoptics but we are doing it wirelessly." His research team built its own kit and carried out the tests in lab conditions over a distance of 100m.
I am becoming increasingly reluctant to click through to the Comments section on any story related to mobile technology as it is invariably cluttered with moaning about individual local coverage problems that add nothing to the technology discussion.
Can I suggest that people afflicted with local connectivity issues take it up with their telco/MP/local newspaper/therapist as appropriate rather than whining in public?
