back to article G.Fast sand-slinger says it's slung bits at 500 Mbps over 200 metres

Hold on to your cabinets: G.Fast chip shipper Sckipio has doubled the reach of its chipsets, and has demoed greater than 500Mbps speeds for a distance of 200 metres. To put that in perspective, 500Mbps over a distance of 200 metres equates to about one-third of a Usain*. The company is chuffed, because that's double the …

A waste of time and money...

    That is all.

Indeed. Usain Bolt could easily carry two or more DVDs without being slowed down significantly.

Or a USB stick. Hell, even 2½" hard drives aren't that bulky and they go up to nearly 2TB.

    Or just 1x 6TB HDD :)

We really need a reference Usain

For example, is this when he's being pushed hard in an Olympic final, or when he just chugs alond in a heat? Plus, the standard may degrade over time, as his legs age.

Do what the economists do to deal with inflation - "all speeds normalised to 2012 Usains"

That is quite a lot of him. Of they were all carrying a DVD it would leave gfast for dead.

    Usain Bolt carrying a DVD?

Isn't a DVD a bit old fashioned, perhaps a 1TB SSD/USB stick would be more appropriate?

    Excuse

Pretty much an excuse for BT to yawn, roll over and not bother investing in fibre to the premises. We will never get the infrastructure we want and in some cases need at this pace.

    Usain Bolt

Usain would have significant latency compared to G.fast?

An advantage is that while he was running to the cabinet to fetch your next download, he could also pop by the fridge and fetch you a beer.

But rather than get someone to carry DVDs to and from the cabinet, why not move your laptop to the cabinet and plug it in directly?
