WOS up with no fact checking, Reg?!
DDN’s sales records indicate that in 2011, Hightail purchased our very high-performance GRIDScaler parallel file system storage solution (thank you very much Hightail – we appreciate the business) and at no time purchased WOS object storage as this article states. DDN can’t raise prices on a product we never sold, and Cleversafe certainly can’t displace what never existed! There clearly is a misunderstanding of the different storage tiers in play.
Since DDN GRIDScaler is architected for maximum IOP and throughput performance for primary file storage, we are not at all surprised by the large price disparity called out in the article. In fact, it is exactly this price differential that drives many high performance storage users to integrate active archive and object storage tiers within their data centers for less active data. DDN’s WOS object storage is at the forefront of this rapidly evolving market and leads the object storage market for high performance and massive scalability. DDN’s WOS object storage platform is at the opposite end of the cost spectrum from GRIDScaler and is architected to deliver a very low TCO, while still providing high performance with massive scalability and data durability. Comparing DDN’s GRIDScaler to DDN’s WOS is not an apples to apples comparison – it is like comparing the cost and performance of a Ducati motorcycle to that of a minivan. We caution end users seriously considering object storage not to make the same unfortunate mistake as the author(s) did both in this article and the original press release.
