back to article Official: European members prefer to fondle Apple iPads

The European Parliament’s IT department is attempting to drag MEPs kicking and screaming into the digital age… by letting them play with the latest tablets. The parliamentarians will get to choose which device they wish to keep. DG ITEC – as the Parl’s tech department is known – has set up a play area where the members can …

"A Windows option is not yet available, but will be in the coming weeks."

Probably not a huge worry, they should be able to use their tablets without stands (at least for a few weeks).

    FAIL

    Obviously...

they choose Apple because it's "cool" and the tax payer is paying the iPremium (tm).

      Absolutely,

If they had to pay themselves, ( or had any ethical standards) they'd want to know which was the most economical.

Since it's a shiny toy they want the coolest, best known device that they can flash around.

If they had to pay themselves...

FAIL....these clowns earn so much that they would STILL fork out 100% more for an iPad than stoop so plebly low to opt for Android or MS.

The sooner we get disconneted from these clowns, the better.

Because if you're a politician what you should be using is a tablet with a bash shell to do all of your work?

      What premium?

A quick Google shows the price for a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 16GB wifi only is $499 from most of the stores. Same as a 16 GB wifi only iPad Air 2.

At least in the US. Prices in the EU may differ, but not by all that much - given the recent strength in the dollar, Apple's exchange rates are probably quite so unreasonable as they used to be...

        Re: What premium?

$499 + 20% VAT is £381.60 at current exchange rates. Both are on sale in the UK at £399.

With 23% VAT, it is €489.56, and it costs €509 in Ireland.

Oh dear - I hope this doesn't mean that they'll start showing up for work in skinny jeans.

      Re: Obviously...

More likely because you just get an iPad. Choice of two sizes and a few capacities.

Not the choice of 5,000 Android tablets.

You simply don't know what the heck you're getting with the Android tablets, in most cases a very annoying, poor quality user experience, vendor specific tosh, variable quality user interface due to OEM tinkering.

As a long term Android user ....

... I'm glad they chose iPads. If they had access to the Google Play store, they'd binge on free apps like the attractive analogue clock that wants access to your contacts list and the ability to send SMS messages - etc. You just know their Android device would be pwned within a day.

    Not the first time.

I'm remember that when the iPad first came out there was lots of excitement about it, so the Parliament voted itself free iPads, one for every member (750 at a cost of about £400,000).

And only this year there was a photo tweeted from inside parliament which showed 106 empty iPad mini boxes.

Snuffle in that trough, little piggy! Oink Oink!

Ahhh... another wonderful use of EU taxpayers' money

That's Christmas sorted for the sons/daughters/nieces/nephews of 750 MEPs!

    What about security?

If everyone must have a tablet, it shouldn't be up to MEPs to choose their favourite bling, it should be up to the IT dept to choose the most secure option.

And lock it down to within an inch of its life. No cloudy storage or Play Store or App Store for you, just enterprise apps.

      Re: What about security?

you've never dealt with politicians in real life, have you?

    It's OK...

It's perfectly safe to give them tablets. After all, they never actually produce any output anyway!

'By end of day two of the “exhibition” 50 of the 750 MEPs had been along to look at what was on offer'

Says it all really, bunch of lazy feckers.....

    1. Philippe

what the story doesn't say is

Were there only 50 MP who could be asked to get off their fat "derriere" and check the tabs out, or were there only 50MP in the parliament on that day?

  10. arober11

Dishing out free iPads will work out a lot cheaper than letting MEP's vote to fund a European based research project to produce an equivalent device.

Oh, the EU have been there already, google: OMI-NewsPAD' (EP9252) / have look at the specs: http://chrisacorns.computinghistory.org.uk/docs/Acorn/ART/ART_DS003_NewsPAD.pdf

The question was...What goes best with your (free) iPhone?

Is it told anywhere that they all received a free iPhone years ago (for work of course)? In fact they probably are at their 2nd or 3rd device each, so the ecosystem is set for them.
